Telstra customers can finally subscribe to Foxtel TV on their iPhones, 18 months after the first iPhones were sold on the Next G network.
Australia's largest mobile network today announced that customers using the iPhone will be able to access Foxtel TV services, which consists of 30 channels of pre-packaged video content. The service is available through the BigPond web portal and is not a stand-alone application download through the Apple App Store.
The telco also announced an enhanced compression codec used to create the content for iPhone, which the company believes will deliver an improvement in the quality of both the video and the audio. We're yet to test this claim as the service was unavailable on the iPhone at the time of writing. The enhanced streaming experience is only available on iPhone now, though Telstra will be rolling out the improved service to other handsets in the coming months.
Telstra iPhone customers interested in Foxtel TV can subscribe for unmetered access for AU$18 per month, or can trial the service for AU$4 per day.

I found Telstra very helpful actually, except that I signed up last night & wondered why it wouldn't work. The operator at Telstra checked it out & I found out the service wouldn't be switched on until today. Other than that, I am finding the quality to be excellent, and I like the fact that the streaming video is part of the mobile Bigpond 'free to browse', so watching shows does not impact on data usage. I have also signed up for the three month plan which should give me time to see if I get my money's worth of viewing.

I subscribed to it this morning. Getting it operating was a nightmare and I received no help from Telstra nor FoxTel. I eventually worked-out a solution myself - after subscribing you need to re-boot the iPhone. I've no idea why, but it worked.
Anyway, now that I have it working, I am very impressed. Video quality is excellent on the iPhone, though it is not quite full screen in landscape mode. It is also possible to connect the iPhone to a tv to watch it. The picture quality is as good as or better than YouTube on a tv. I subscribed for 3 months for $49, which is a $5 saving. There are even better deals for subscribing for 6 or 12 months. Overall, I am very impressed . . . but don't expect an actual customer service from Telstra or FoxTel if you have problems! -
