Optus has confirmed that the Android 2.2 update for the Samsung Galaxy S has finally landed.

Following a tweet from a reader, Optus confirmed that the update is available. Users keen to update their phones can access the firmware using the Samsung Kies software suite.

Users are urged to back up data before attempting the update, as there is a risk of it wiping data including contacts and multimedia.

There's still no official release from Samsung or information from Vodafone and Telstra about whether the update is available for the versions of these handsets specific to those carriers.

If you have a Telstra or VHA Galaxy S and have a moment, run Kies and let us know if it finds an update for you.

This phone is so slow! it's painful at times trying to navigate thru the menu's. Even the swipe text only works if you go at it's pace! Get up any speed on it and it doesn't work.

I downloaded the latest version of kies and then plugged my phone in and it tells me that there is a firmware update available. I am a bit nervous about doing it though because I can't work out how to backup my apps. My wife got her galaxy s just after they came out and it had the first firmware. When I connected her phone to kies about 6 weeks ago, there was a firmware update available. I performed the update and it completely wiped the phone. contacts, calendar, photos and every app, including paid ones. Kies does have a backup for contacts, calendar, and multimedia, which I have done, but nothing for apps. I don't want to lose my apps. any ideas how to back up apps before performing the firmware update?

I bought the Samsung Galaxy S 19000t on 14th Dec from a Telstra store. I asked if it ran android 2.2 (Froyo). The salesperson said that it didn't but that I could upgrade the Firmware from 2.1 to 2.2.
I tried doing this, but have since found out that the upgrade isn't available to Telstra customers.
This is crazy. Does anyone know when it might come available. I've tried calling Telstra and no one seems to know. They jsut tell me to call Samsung.
Please please help. I'm at a total loss.

Buy outright & unlocked. Then u get the updates from the manufacturer not the phone company.
