Soul Calibur III: Compare prices  Editors' choice

The good:

  • Retains the series’ deep and engrossing fighting system
  • A graphical showcase for the PS2
  • Three all new characters
  • Huge list of playable characters
  • Plenty of game modes

The bad:

  • Many of the new game modes, like Chronicles of the Sword, lack finesse
  • “Arcade” mode hidden under several menus
  • Veterans may find little new in terms of character control

The bottomline:

When it sticks to fighting, Soul Calibur III is a definite must-have, featuring the same tight controls and in-depth system of earlier games in the series. Some of the new gameplay modes are more miss than hit, however.
