How to upgrade your PlayStation 3 Hard Drive

It doesn't matter if you have the 20GB, 60GB, or even the new 80GB PlayStation 3 -- you can always use more storage space. All that available hard-disk space quickly disappears once you start downloading games, demos, and HD videos. Fortunately, Sony has designed the PS3 to allow console owners to perform their own hard-drive upgrades. You can go out and select your own hard drive instead of being forced to buy an official first-party hard-disk accessory. However, giving console owners that freedom means that aspiring upgraders will need to know how to select the right hard-drive upgrade and the proper installation technique.

Hard-disk manufacturer Seagate supplied us with a 160GB Momentus 5400.3 for our upgrade.

The first step to replacing the hard disk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new hard disk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400-RPM and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talking 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB.

Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to back up the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard-drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a memory stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognise it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can only do FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller.

Save your data using the PS3's backup utility.

If your storage device isn't large enough to handle a full system backup, you can selectively copy data over through the various music, photo, and game menus in the XMB. Your PlayStation Network login and system settings will remain safe on the system during the entire process. After you have your data safely backed up, you can move on to the actual hard-drive swap.

You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to complete this part of the installation process. The PS3 owner's manual also includes step-by-step details on how to replace the hard drive, in case you need more instructions.

Turn off and unplug the system. Remove the plastic HD side-panel, and remove the blue screw.

Open the metal latch, move the drive tray to the right, and slide out the drive.

Remove the four screws that hold the hard drive to the tray. Use a screwdriver that fits snugly because the screws are extremely tight and easy to strip.

Swap in the new drive, and replace the screws.

Put the drive tray back into the system and slide it into place. Then replace the blue screw and snap the side panel back onto the system.

Turn on the console and let the system format the new drive. Then load up the PS3 backup utility to restore data from your external storage device back onto the PS3 hard drive.

At this point you should have a newly upgraded PS3 and the leftover hard drive. You could try selling the old drive, but small-capacity used drives might not fetch enough money to be worth the hassle of finding a buyer. If you still want to make the drive useful, you can buy an external drive enclosure to make it into a portable storage device.

Largest 2.5" HD on the market is currently 250GB, probably worth the wait for a year to get a larger drive at a cheaper price.

I have read that with the 250GB, the formatting by PS3 doesn't actually allow you to use the whole 250GB. You only get 205 GB of free space regardless after the formatting. Is this still true or is there a later firmware which addresses this problem.

MadCow - This happens with computers as well. The actual size of your drive and the formatted capacity are different. There's an exceedingly technical explanation for it, but basically, you never actually get to use the amount of space on the label- Which is why a lot of things such as iPods say "Formatted Capacity is less". Western Digital should be releasing a 320GB Sata 2.5" Soon.

To make the old drive an external, you'll need to purchase an external case like this: http://www.itestate.com.au/products_detail.asp?code=PD00003387 (i have one of these!). Simply install the old PS3 disk in there, and it'll now act as an external USB drive on any computer. Make sure it is Sata, not IDE!

Any 2.5" SATA HDD will do, doesn't matter what brand and I don't think the buffer size matters either. And no, I don't think Sony would have been stupid enough to let people rip their games from HDD dumping. I mean FFS, they allow people to download and install games into the HDD from the PS store and even include a feature in the manual guiding them as to how to replace the hard drive. They've already been dumping BRay discs with Linux on the console, realizing people could rip out downloaded games from the FAT partition is practically a no brainer.

You can NOT copy entire PS3 disk based games onto your hard drive. Unless you have pirated versions on a heavily modified PS3. The kind of PS3 that will be bricked the next time a game forces a system updates down your throat. You can NOT use an external drive to save game installs or game data. You can use it to save various media files. You can not transfer locked data without using the Backup and Restore utilities. Anything else?

The reason the size reported is smaller than the one installed is that the ps3 uses a portion of it for its own use (OS, swap partition, etc) It the same thing you get with your brand new 80GB ps3; you don't get 80GB for your own use

Not all 2.5" SATA drives are the same and it is very important to know, particularly if looking for the largest possible drive, that the PS3 only take ones that are 9.5mm high! By example; The Samsung Spinpoint HM500LI 500gb 2.5" is the first half terabyte drive that should work with the PS3 (if you can get one - currently supply is short). Of course, by now all the friendly "sages" above should have invested their money in an earlier 500gb 2.5" drive, so may have learned not to be so quick with "smart" statements after their 12.5mm high Fujitsu MHZ2 BT didn't fit. ;-)

I also have the 40g PS3 simply because I already have a PS2 which plays the PS2/PS1 games much better. I upgraded my 40g PS3 to a 500g 2.5" SATA drive as soon as I opened the box. Yes you will always loose some space not due to formatting but due to the GameOS, it has to be installed on the HDD to work. As for it asking for the firmware this is absolutely normal. You need to make a folder on your USB Thumb Drive called PS3 and in there another called UPDATE, place the firmware file in there and follow the instruction on screen and everything will work fine. As for PS3 40g playing PS2/PS1 games, not gonna happen unless Sony makes firmware with full software emulation support. The 40g has none of the old hardware form the PS2 so it can't play the old games. If you really want to play PS2/PS1 games get a PS2, it works much better.
