Sony's DualShock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3 came out in Japan late last year and debuted in the United States just last week, but until now, Aussie gamers have had no indication as to when they could expect the new peripheral. It seems we won't have long to wait, however, as Sony has confirmed that the DualShock 3 will be available in Australia on April 24 for AU$99.95 and in New Zealand on May 9 for NZ$109.95. In the US, the controller retails for US$54.99.

The controller features the same motion-sensing technology that the Sixaxis has built in, so it's backwards compatible with most PS3 games. Some games in the PS3 back catalogue already support rumble, while others will have it added via a patch.

Last week, CNET.com.au's sister site GameSpot confirmed that Sony had discontinued the Sixaxis controller from production, making the DualShock 3 the default controller from here on in. At the time of publication, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia could not confirm when the company would start shipping PS3s with DualShocks in the box or if the games compatibility list in America differs for Australia.

I've had it here in oz for about a month and a half, I imported it form asia, and it cost about HALF what they are going to charge for it, which is rediculous. but the controller feels MUCH better than the sixaxis, it has slightly more weight to it, feels much sturdier and has slightly more sensitive joysticks. the vibration function is also very good, and brings that extra bit of life back into your hands, I had gotten so used to no rumble, that I was surprised how much I liked having it back.

Yep I imported as well cost me $60 dollars as opposed to the crazy $100 here, unacceptable. Way to gouge us Sony. It is good news tho that we all have a chance to have rumble back now!

I always thought it would be crazy to have both the standard Sixaxis and the DS3 selling as well, and knew Sony would discontinue the standard Sixaxis. This proves the standard Sixaxis was produced while the Immersion lawsuit was still going on and had not been finalised, hence no force-feedback. Remember how we were all originally told the force feedback would interfere with the sixaxis sensor, this was a smokescreen while the legal proceedings continued. $100 for a DS controller is way too much, I bought mine from Play-Asia, cost me $AU59.90 plus $AU30 Fedex, so still cheaper than buying in Australia. Sony should make the price of the DS3 the same price as the original Sixaxis since its not being produced anymore.
