Live it up: 10 steps to get your Xbox online

If you're not playing your Xbox online on Xbox Live, then you're missing out on the best the console has to offer.

Sure there's plenty of offline gaming to be had, but with more and more games coming out with extensive on-line capabilities, there's a whole new world of gaming to explore. Games like Halo 2 and Forza Motorsport come alive on Xbox Live, and you'll never be wanting for some multiplayer action from players in Australia and around the world.

For those Xbox Live newbies out there, CNET.com.au is here to help with these ten handy tips to getting your console online. The tips below should answer most of your Xbox Live questions, but email us on cnet@cnet.com.au if there's anything else you'd like to know. Otherwise, visit Microsoft's Xbox Live site for more information. Happy fragging!

1. What do I need for Xbox Live?
Before you get to play the goodness that is Forza online, you'll need a few essentials.

  • An Xbox (obviously)
  • A broadband Internet connection
  • An Xbox Live Starter Kit
  • An Ethernet cable
  • A credit card

2. What type of broadband connection do I need?
If you're on a dial-up, ISDN or satellite internet connection, then forget it - Xbox Live is for high speed broadband connections through cable or DSL only. The minimum broadband speed Microsoft recommends is 256K for download and 64K for uploads - check with your service provider to confirm what your speeds are. These minimum speeds will get you a fairly lag free gaming experience, although faster connections will obviously mean a smoother experience at most times. A fast download speed is the most important spec, although if you plan on hosting your own online games sessions then having decent upload speed becomes vital as well.

3. What's an Xbox Live Starter Kit?
An Xbox Live Starter Kit, which you'll find at most stores selling Xbox consoles or games, contains some vital components you'll need to get online. The kit includes a disc which updates yours Xbox Dashboard with Live functionality, a headset that you connect to your controller which allows you to interact with other gamers online, and some demo games. The AU$99.95 Xbox Live Starter Kit price also gives you a 12-month subscription to the Xbox Live service, which begins from when you first sign up.

4. Why do I need a credit card?
Even though you've already paid for a 12-month Live subscription, you'll still need a valid credit card to be able to complete the online registration. Microsoft says this is an added security measure they use for account verification, and the card will not be charged any extra fees. A note of caution though - if you do not specifically cancel your Live account after 12 months, it will be automatically renewed and the charge slugged on your card.

5. How do hook up my Xbox to my broadband connection?
First of all, you'll need an Ethernet cable to hook up your Xbox to your broadband modem/router. Ethernet cable, commonly used for computer networking, has a head that looks similar to a phone connector but is slightly larger. Once you've plugged one end of the Ethernet cable into the back of your Xbox, you have a choice of either plugging the other end directly into your modem (if you want a dedicated connection) or through a router (if you want to share the Internet connection with your PC). A direct connection through a modem is probably preferable, especially if your broadband speed is at the lower end of the range and you don't want a shared connection with a PC to result in laggy gaming. But if you have multiple devices that need to be on the Internet at the same time, then having a router connection is the best bet. There is also a third way of connecting to Xbox Live, which is useful if your cable or DSL modem is USB-based, or is an internal PCI modem. Internet connection sharing is a more complex connection, with more information on how to get online found here.

Once all the cables are connected, then it's a simple matter of turning on the Xbox and following the on-screen prompts on your television to set up the Live account.

6. OK, I'm online. What games can I play on Xbox Live?
There are dozens of games that can be played on Xbox Live, with more to come. And it's not just online gameplay - some games will have new areas, maps or other features that can be downloaded from Live. Most games will state on their packaging if they're Xbox Live compatible, but for a full list, click here. Some of the recent games CNET.com.au has reviewed with Live play include Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Brothers In Arms, the excellent Forza Motorsport, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, Doom 3, and of course Halo 2.

7. How much data does Live use up?
If you've got a metered broadband account - one of those that only allow a certain amount of information to be downloaded and uploaded every month - then be mindful that playing on Live can chew up some MBs. On average, 10-20MB an hour is downloaded when playing on Xbox Live, though that figure changes from game to game. For example a one on one race in Forza Motorsport won't be too demanding in data, but a 16-player Halo 2 Slayer session is likely to create higher levels of data transfer.

8. When is the best time to play on Live?
Most people jump onto Live on evenings and weekends, so that's probably the best time to get onboard as there will be more people online that you can play. Generally you have more choices of games to play when there are more people online available to play, particularly with those on your friends list.

9. I've got a modded Xbox. Can I still get online with Live?
The short answer is no. Microsoft doesn't support any Xboxes that have been modded in any way, with a spokesperson saying that : "The Xbox Live team has recently installed additional security measures to make sure that consumers have a fun, fair, and cheat-free environment in which to compete and play."

10. Any other tips for getting online with Live?
Of course! The most important is to maximise the connection speed Live has to play with. If you've got a computer sharing the connection, then make sure you're not downloading something at the same time as you're playing on Live.

When you're online, make sure you're joining games (that is, servers hosting a particular game session) that have a good connection. Most games you try to join will have some sort of indicator showing how strong the connection is - this is usually expressed as a series of green bars or dots. The more bars, the faster and more stable the connection. Also, make sure these games haven't exceeded their maximum player limit, another possible cause for lag and slowdown.

Is there such thing as "direct connect" for x-box live? This means that i do not need a router, i simply plug a cord into my x-box that goes into my computer. I want to know the absloute minimum requirments for using x-box live. I do not want to know what will be lag free and all the rest of that! I want to know what i have to have to even be able to sign up and play!

My son asked me for details of my credit card when he first bought his xbox live home for the first time. I assumed he had already paid for it and as 16yr olds have a hard time explaining themselves, I was very skeptical of his request. I rang up the Microsoft hotline and was reassured with the explanation. I have got onto this CNET website and again was reassured. How has microsoft explained this "credit card" scenario to concerned parents? Is it on the box somewhere or do all parents go thru this apprehension? If so, can someone tell Microsoft about this (CNET ?)

That was really helpfull. If you have a wirless connection to a laptop, then you can unplug the ethernet cable that goes into the router (leave in the router unplug from the modem)and plug the ethernet cable for xbox live directly to your modem. When using xboxlive unpug the cable from the moden that you where using for xboxlive and plug the 1 in for your modem.

This console is almost completly worthless if you don't pay yearly for live. There's only a handful of games that have any SP replay value. The vast majority are designed around Multiplayer and are most often not even worth renting unless you have live. So in the end. If you want a console to enjoy until the next gen, the 360 is the worst choice. Once you buy it, you never stop paying. With an insanely high rate of failure and the fact that you never stop paying to get teh most out of it, it's a complete ripoff for those who value a dollar. While the PS3 has a higher initial cost, it's by far the better in the long run. Anyone who claims otherwise is an xbox fanboy. Don't believe me? Then do the math yourself. 4 years of live alone pushes the 360 beyond the cost of a ps3. Just to match the ps3 features you have to buy a new 360 elite which is more than the premium, hd-dvd player, and 4 years of Live for mp. Oh and if you are stupid enough to get a 360, enjoy paying for all those wallpapers, screenshots , and map packs which PC gamers STILLL get for free... 360 IS THE BIGGEST RIP OFF CONSOLE IN HISTORY! DON'T SUPPORT MS!!!!!!!!!!!

OK there alot of noobs in this forum ok read the top of the page for what u need also no fricken dial up connections yes you can use linksys wireless adapters it will work my xbox is on my top floor my linksys is in the basement o ya and if the xbox is probably not modded if you bought it brand new and u can still go on live if its modded just cant turn your mods on (mods are cheats pretty much) you dont need the starter kit just the wire the subscription and a mic if u want it to be fun o ya and anything that isnt dial up

It costs about $80-$100 for a 12/13 month subscription! But before you pay for the service make sure you are very sure it is all connected up properly!

Well Josh, my friend has Xbox live and he uses dial-up. The two don't mix well at all. It's laggy and just completely takes the fun out of gaming. I guess it can still work if you really want it to, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Hmmmm, Dial up won't work because you can't get your Xbox 360 to "Dial" your ISP. Unless you share a connection using ETHERNET cable (From any computer store) with your PC which would be silly because it would be impossible to play at that speed... You can play without having a Credit Card, Go to a Computer Store and buy a PrePaid Live Card and just use the code to get live.. IP Address is Internet Protocol. example 143.123.123.12 It's just a number your Internet Provider gives your PC so the internet can communicate with your PC (Or xbox 360) This number is unique. Wireless Broadband CAN work if the Modem settings has an OPEN NAT Setting, Your Internet Provider should know if this is OPEN or CLOSED. Broadband Modems also need this Setting OPEN. For any other Technical Problems Ring your Internet Provider and ask them if the Modem you have is XBOX live compatible. IF it Keeps saying your Gamertag is taken It's because millions of people play Live and you need to be REALLY REALLY Unique with it... NO YOU CAN"T connect to xbox live without the internet, It's like trying to run your fridge without plugging it in??? No the console isn't worthless, Comparing a PC to Xbox live is like comparing Monkey's and dolphins. XBOX 360 has Greater support from game producers and companies than PS3 and Sony Networking is worse than a Barbara Streisand Album. I've never paid for a wallpaper or anything like that, It's great fun playing Live and it's worth the money to me.. I pitty poor PS3 Owners, Got jipped

this suggestion list panders to a non-existent contingent. For example, people who are "asking" what days of the week to play their 360 online. Never, in the history of human creatures, has anyone ever asked this stupid question.

oh well.. while I'm at it, anyone who actually insists that Halo 3 lived up to the hype is delusional, and their opinions should be disregarded. It was generic. Also, you can thank the xbox live network for prohibiting LAN co-op in Army of Two. Everyone's gotta roll with their Live service, even if it's absolutely preposterously unnecessary Woo hoo.... Thanks a lot Microsoft. While you're at it, kill off another game I'd like to play on my PC/PS3 via insidious bribes. At least every game I ever wanted to play on 360 is now available on my computer (gears of war, Bioshock, and soon Mass Effect). I don't see any reason to give these people money, and I don't want to blow a chunk of cash on something that's quite probably going to break within a year, at which point the company will continue to send back to me a temp fix that will last a couple months before it needs to be sent back. Surely M$ has enough money to not only eat overselling their hardware to pre-empt compitition... hopefully, they can pay for all the corners they cut to save money (like, actually replacing broken units with new ones) Oh well. You guys enjoy. I'm looking forward to metal gear on my PS3 (and, why not, Mass Effect on my PC). I honestly can't think of a good reason to buy one of these things anymore.
