Google has teamed up with industry heavyweights Intel and Sony to bring the company's open-source Android platform to the lounge room, according to The New York Times.
The Google TV project has apparently been underway for several months, and aims to make video streaming and services such as Picasa and Twitter navigable on your television via remote control. Logitech is reportedly developing a remote with a miniature keyboard in conjunction with the project.
The article claims Google has developed a set-top box featuring an Intel Atom processor but says it wants to incorporate the technology directly into the TV.
Downloadable apps have been one of the biggest drawcards for devices like the iPhone and the Android series of devices, with Google announcing it had 30,000 offerings on its App Market service.
Google is hoping to bring the same functionality to the television — something the competitive Apple TV doesn't currently allow.
AT CES 2010, Intel unveiled its Wireless Display technology, which enabled a PC desktop to be displayed wirelessly on a compatible TV.
In February, Sony announced its Bravia Internet Video with partners including SBS and Yahoo7.
