Google has announced the launch of the new ultraportable HP Chromebook 11 at Australian retailers this week for just AU$399.

Google's new Chrome OS-based ultraportable laptop had a troubled US launch in October last year, whereby users were reporting on an overheating power adapter. Manufacturer HP moved to recall and fix the issue, and now the HP Chromebook 11 has landed in Australia.

The 11-inch laptop boasts portability, flexibility and integration with Android devices as selling points. It's slim and light at 297 x 192 x 17.6 millimetres and weighs just 1.04 kilograms, with a strong, lightweight magnesium chassis.

Inside, it's powered by a Samsung Exynos 5 Dual dual-core mobile processor, with 2GB DDR3 RAM and a 16GB SSD. Battery life lasts up to six hours, and, at this point in time, connects to the internet via dual-band WiFi 802.11 only.

The 11.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels with a 176-degree wide viewing angle and 16:9 ratio. Speakers are placed under the keyboard so that sound doesn't get muffled, and it has two USB 2.0 ports and a micro USB port for charging, as well as SlimPort video out.

It might help if you think about it as a tablet with a keyboard instead of a touchscreen.

Although the specs are fairly light, you get a few Google goodies to go along with it. Many Google apps come pre-installed, and it syncs automatically with your Android phone and/or tablet so that you can pick up where you left off across multiple devices. Gmail Offline and Google Docs allow you to keep working offline, and you get 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage for free for two years, which takes some of the load off the rather small 16GB of on-board storage.

It's available now for AU$399 through JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman, both in selected stores and online. Check the Google website to find a retailer near you.
