In a bid to make its media centre PCs more living-room friendly, HP is set to release a new "skinable" mini-PC, dubbed the "HP Pavilion Slimline PC s7540a".

According to an HP spokesperson speaking exclusively with CNET.com.au, the machine is "approximately 1/3 the size of a regular PC, while maintaining all of the capabilities of a media centre PC."

The product supports HP's "Cool Skinz", which are vinyl stickers that can be applied to the system's chassis. They'll cost around AU$50, and HP promises that there'll be "many designs to choose from".

"Skins can range from anything as commercially focused as Batman images to skins which consumers design themselves (such as family photos, 'graffiti' of messages from friends, favourite movie stars)," according to an HP spokesperson.

The specific processes and costs associated with designing your own skin are as yet unknown, but what is known is that the PC itself will be announced in July at an approximate price of AU$1999.

Technically, the s7540a is far from a hot rod, but it should be powerful enough to perform most media centre tasks (excluding gaming). Below are the basic specifications that HP provided:

  • Intel 735a 1.7GHz Mobile Processor
  • 512MB RAM, 160GB HDD
  • SuperMulti + Lightscribe DVDRW
  • Int. graphics
  • Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
  • MCE + Remote

The MCE DMA2200 is probably the best media streaming device we've ever tested. It only works with Windows Vista, but for streaming media from a PC to the TV, it's ideal.
