I have tried to sync my ringtone from itunes to my iphone but it gives an error message "were not copied to iphone because they could not be found". I have changed the file extension to m4r but it still won't load. Can anyone suggest another way to do it?

I just used this today and it still works! in itunes 9 you need to "create AAC version" then follow directions as normal.

this is great but it doesn't add it to your ringtones list in your phone? it is in the ringtones folder under my iphone in itunes, however when trying to assign it to a caller, it is not on the list. any clue?

This method no longer works, but there are plenty of free ringtones available for free on the web. Just google it. My favourite site is www.iphoneringtones.ca All their ringtones are free and there's a big variety.

To change from m4a to m4r, if using windows xp, AFTER you convert to acc version, right click the song file, select 'show in windows explorer' and once there, change the file name by adding .m4r to the end. SOmetimes it also helps if you just make the song file name into one word eg. change "come together- beatles" into one word like "beatles". (obviously the end result will be beatles.m4r) For some reason it makes it easier to drag into itunes later on. You know that its worked if the icon changes into a ring tone icon once you add .m4r to the end of the song title.
