HP Photosmart C5380

By Leonard Goh on 03 November 2008

Affordable all-in-one printers are a dime a dozen these days, but from the looks of it the C5380 may just be one of the best.

User rating:5.4

Currently, the printer market is saturated with all-in-one (AIO) machines and it can be difficult for manufacturers to make their products stand out among the competition. HP's latest range of Photosmart printers can be hard to differentiate from its rivals, but they come with attractive price tags, such as the Photosmart C5380. If you print a lot of photos at home, you will find the colour LCD and five-ink system useful. However, it doesn't come with fax and network capability, so it's a consideration if you're looking for a multifunctional printer for your home office.

Upside
Colour LCDs on printers seem to be all the rage these days, especially more so for those primed for photo printing. This is why the Photosmart C5380 has a 2.4-inch colour display which will be useful when you want to output straight off memory cards or a USB flash drive.

The C5380 has good specifications, but unfortunately it lacks a fax function and an Ethernet port.(Credit: HP)

Supported by five individual Vivera ink tanks, we expect more vivid photo printouts from the ink box. For heavy-duty users, there is the option for high-capacity XL cartridges which the company claims will help drive down costs.

To meet the needs of home offices and small businesses, the C5380 is able to churn out draft-quality documents at a speed of 31 pages per minute (ppm). This speed is typical of most inkjet AIOs, so what will probably set the HP apart from the competition would be its print speed for photos. In draft mode, HP said the AIO can output an A4-sized photograph in 18 seconds.

An AIO is nothing without its standard functions of scan and copy, and the C5380 boasts both. It also sweetens the deal by including an on-board memory card reader that supports most common flash media, as well as a USB port to plug your thumb drive into for stand-alone printing.

Downside
Oddly, for a printer that is targeted at home office and small business users, the C5380 is not equipped with a fax function. Although this is quite typical of AIOs in this price range, we would have liked it better if it was more of an all-rounder.

This may sound demanding, but we expected to see more connectivity options on the printer considering its audiences. Not everyone prints through a Wi-Fi network, but the lack of an Ethernet port can be a deal-breaker for some potential buyers if they want to share the printer.

Outlook
At AU$199, the C5380 is one of the more affordable AIOs on the market with a colour LCD. Small businesses will find the choice of XL ink cartridges tempting as it yields more pages, which can subsequently drive down the cost per page. However, if you don't need a colour LCD and can live with fewer colour choices, you can get the Epson Stylus CX5500 for AU$99.

    • Good: prints fast and in good quality
    • Bad: extremely noisy all the time/ wastes ink/ uses stupid amount of ink/ scanner defaults back to original settings/ does random prink checks/ bascially not worth getting!!

My printer (c5380) constantly makes noise even when i'm not using it! It's also wasted all my ink somehow and i've bearly used it! The scanner won't do as i ask, and defaults back to it's original settings every time.

It's a rubbish printer, I never do these reviews but really don't want anyone else to waste their money on this piece of junk!

    Luke.

    • Good: Good pic quality
    • Bad: Very, very expensive to run.

It is not expensive printer, but eats ink, which is expensive. With black XL cartridge I was not able to do print 500 pages, even if it was marked that I could do around 800 pages. It is very, very expensive to run, and it is very noise.

    • Good: Not bad.

A hard worker, reliable. Don't like the way the printer tells me that the ink is getting low and shows all the cartridges barely to halfway level. Printing CD labels is a bit of a hassle and sometimes printing photos can have a disappointing result. It's also a bit noisy as it gets ready to do a task. All in all though - good value for money.

    • Good: Just bought last night. So far so good. Good printing speed and user friendly
    • Bad: Nothing so far, but it's very new and I don't know how I will feel in six months. :) I too wish it had a fax machine

Just bought this printer last night and managed to set it up within half an hour. Really easy to sync to Mac. Managed to do a couple of photo prints which were really nice quality, especially compared to shocking Epson CX5500 that I have upstairs that just GOBBLES up; ink. Like the little screen and the fact that it read straight from memory card. And it prints SO much faster than the Epson as well. I find it very user friendly.

    • Good: Versatile USB allows Bluetooth and Memory Devices
    • Bad: None for Advertised Features

Out of the box with no PC installation I was able to copy documents from scanner, browse images from USB Stick, and, after adding a Bluetooth Dongle to USB, upload photo's from phone. I also have ordered a CIS (Continuous Ink System) using 60mm Ink reservoirs for each cartridge and will report back when tested.

    • Good: the whole package
    • Bad: nothing so far

great printer, can't fault it, though fax capability would have been good. i have it set up on a home network 3 wired desktops and 2 wireless laptops all print to it.

    • Good: not much, can print on DVD/CDs
    • Bad: Just about everything

If not used regularly, ink dries in the the printhead then extremely bad print quality (streaks, missing colour) and ink cartridges read as empty even if only one print has been made. Numerous calls to support lead to replacement ink heads, replacement printer - all give same result. Have taken to washing the ink heads to get the ink out when not been used for a while.
Suitable for scrap which is where it just may end up!

    • Good: Nice print quality
    • Bad: Low scan qul at high resolutions. Buyer Beware - HP ships these printers with minimal ink

HP sells printers falsely advertising the contents of the package with relation to the ink contained. My
printer was advertised as containing 5 ink cartridges, type HP564. Which are listed on the packaging as
being able to print approximately 250 - 300 pages at a reasonable quality (but obviously subject to the
type of paper and amount of ink per page). I was only able to achieve less than 100 pages at a
deliberately low quality / light ink usage setting before the black ink ran out, the other inks have
    similarly depleted too quickly.

I began emailing HP in April (only tech support reponses were provided, i.e.
turn the printer on an off...) Finally, at the end of June a phone technician admitted that the inks which
ship with printers are not 'trade' cartridges - and only contain a small amount of ink to 'prime the
printer' - despite looking exactly the same and being identified as HP564 cartridges. Furthermore,
nowhere on the box the printer came in was their any indication that the cartridges are not 'trade'
cartridges, nor that they contain only a small amount of ink.

Whether deliberate or not, HP are clearly
misleading the customer and profiting from the deception. A printer must have ink to work, so if every
customer (I assume that the technicians statement was general and applies to all ink printers sold)
needs to purchase another set of inks soon after purchase of the printer, then HP benefits from
    increased sales
