Printing is usually far from the minds of most technology fans. HP is hoping to change the old fuddy-duddy image of paper-spitters by getting down with the cool kids.

The Photosmart Wireless e-All-In-One (we'll call it the B110 from now on) ticks the boxes on price and looks, plus it's got a touchscreen of sorts. But, it's the print-from-email feature that is supposed to make the hipsters sit up and take notice. After setting up the printer, simply send an email to its designated address and watch it go. More on this later.

Look and feel

A piano-black finish is the order of the day, with a curiously attractive honeycomb pattern on the top lid of the all-in-one (printer, scanner, copier). It's Wi-Fi enabled, with 802.11b/g/n and weighs just over 6kg when unpacked. There's also an array of apps so you can totally pimp out your printer, though at the time of writing the list is rather sparse.

As with other HP printers, the B110 comes with a reusable "green" bag around the printer and a reusable pouch for peripherals and cords. It's a nice touch to lend some enviro-cred, but we can't help notice the excessive amounts of plastic packaging, styrofoam and tape that needs to be binned before you can put the printer to use — not unique to HP, indeed, it's endemic among printer manufacturers.

Initial set-up

Normally, getting a printer ready for its close-up is anything but easy. So it is with great pleasure that we report the set-up process for the B110 to be painless. The software installation (drivers compatible with Mac and Windows) takes about 10 minutes, during which you can unpack the printer, install the four ink cartridges and wait for it to finish gurgling and warming up for the first time. Wi-Fi set-up was very easy, with the printer automatically detecting the correct network.

Email me

To set up the printer for email use and to connect it to the internet at large, you need to enter the HP ePrint centre and create a log-in and associate the printer with your account.

First impressions count when it comes to electronic communication; and wouldn't it be better if that first impression was made by an easy-to-remember printer alias like Study_Printer@hpeprint.com rather than 2342hp523fhaj@hpeprint.com? As far as we could tell there's no ability to make an alternative address; only to reset it to an equally confusing string of letters and numbers.

We can also guess the next thing on your mind when anyone utters the phrase "email": spam. Fortunately, it's not much of an issue as from within the e-printer interface the B110 can be configured to accept email from everyone or from an allowed senders list only.

Sending documents and photos to the printer via email is easy enough, just send a blank message with a blank subject line to the address, and attach the document or photo. Then, within 20 seconds (depending on the network connection) the printer will spit out the electronic contents in physical form.

Print quality

For a printer that costs AU$129 you don't expect too much in terms of print quality — and that pretty much sums up this machine. In small font sizes, some lettering smudges and blacks aren't particularly crisp on plain paper. Photo prints on glossy paper fare only slightly better, with blacks tinged in a green hue. It takes 36 seconds for a standard 4x6-inch print to emerge from the B110 when sent from a computer connected to the local Wi-Fi network.

Running costs

The B110 runs on four ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow and black), which retail for AU$19 each. Cost per print is 6 cents for a colour page and 7 cents for black. The B110 also can use XL cartridges, which cost more but have a higher page yield.

Conclusion

The B110 does exactly what it says on the box — print from email — but unfortunately its print quality is only average, making it useful only for non-critical documents and pictures.

"Too expensive to run"

SarahE1 posted a review

The Good:easy set up, cheap

The Bad:burns through ink and frequent error messages

I haven't had the wireless connectivity problems others have had but it keeps on refusing to print saying there is a system error and it runs out of ink really quickly and the print quality is pretty poor. A lemon, wish I'd researched a bit more before buying this, it was an impulse buy as they were cheap at officeworks and the guy in the shop recommended it.

"Don't buy it"

The Good:Cheap, nice looking

The Bad:Cheap, expensive after purchase, unstable wi-fi setp

I bought the B110 HP Photosmart and have regretted it ever since. I bought it mainly because of the wireless feature, and it is a pain to set up the connection because of the abysmal user interface. Worse, if you have more than one wireless router in the house and set up the printer for both, it seems to forget the settings and you have to do it all over again.

The real killer is that it is an ink guzzler and seems to consume cartridges faster than you can say "print". And as some other reviewer has said, the cartridges are not compatible with other HP printers, and they don't come cheap.

All in all, a total rip-off. Don't go anywhere near it.

Wouldn't recommend this printer. Always getting messages about ink cartridges being damaged or not in properly, when this is not the case. Have spent a fortune trying different cartridges - may as well have bought a new printer. Print quality not great.

Pain of a printer. Hard to set up and wireless funtion was sporadic. Keeps saying error or low on ink when it isn't. Nightmare and wouldn't buy HP again.

The Good:You'll love this when you read the blurb and see how inexpensive it

The Bad:But as soon as you start using it, you'll realise you were ripped off!

Firstly, HP obnoxiously parcels in far too much heavy and useless ancillary software into this (and many of their other) printer. Secondly, this printer comes with the promise of lots of extra functionality all at an inexpensive price, but most of it is unstable. I've had to uninstall, and re-install 3 times already. This is the worst printer I've ever bought. I'm giving up on HP.

The Good:Reliable Wi-Fi operation

The Bad:Awful colour print quality

Cheap for a Wi-Fi multi-function device the B100a falls down badly with its very poor colour printing performance,; the results are not worth framing and just acceptable (for some) for mailing.

The print direct to printer function is IMHO just a gimmick. With todays internet gateways still prone to lockups [requiring a user reboot] I just cannot see the point of it as it cannot be used, reliably, unattended.

When powering up the printer takes MINUTES to prepare itself before being ready to print, during this time it is extremely noisy.

O.K. for basic document printing and 'proof' quality prints, but that is its ceiling for me.

"Fundamentally useless, only prints when it wants and wont work at all on wifi"

The Good:pretty looking box

The Bad:wifi useless, noisy, clunky, slow, freezes, need I say more?

Took ages to set up. Did everything per the instructions, hooking up with USB and setting it up for wireless. Didnt work. Tried setting up the wireless on the printer keypad, didnt work.. When I switch it on and hook it up to USB it clunks and chunks for ages before being ready. Most of the time when I ask it to print it hangs up. Sometimes, just sometimes it will print something. Like others, it gives me ink low even with new cartridges in and yes I have taken off the little covers and fitted them and print tested etc. Sad; it came as part of an Apple deal with my lovely macbook pro and timeport. Now I am away on travel with it all and the stupid printer will not work on wireless at all - it says it cannot see the network regardless of whether the router is right next to it, 1, 2,3 metres away or the other end of the boat. Frustrating. I think I will box it up and send it to HP for their museum of useless artefacts.

"Not as bad as they say"

The Good:All-in-one, Cheap, Wireless, Web Sudoku!

The Bad:Average quality

Have just purchased and setup. Wireless was easy, and the install CD did all the work on the PC (although watch for the option to stop it installing lots of useless stuff). Took about 20 mins to get printing. Print quality is decidedly average for documents. Certainly not business letter quality, but fine for home office type stuff.

Scanner works well, although I suffered a wireless disconnection during a scan and needed to power cycle the B110 to get the scanner back (printer worked during lock up of scanner). I paid AUD$67 (Aussie dollars!). If it lasts a year then I will be happy.

I'll post more if I get more negatives from it.

"Cheap and Nasty"

MelodyW posted a review

The Good:Cheap, Wireless, Apps, ePrint

The Bad:Cheap, Nasty, Noisy, Crap quality

Just wanted to say that I had to reset the email print settings today, and now you CAN actually put in a custom email address for ePrinting.

Had to reset it because I couldn't remember the log in details for the HP ePrint website. So, had to disable the service, which for some reason deleted the stored wifi settings (?!), so then I had to re-do wifi settings THEN re-enable ePrinting... All in all, seems like a whole lot of trouble could be avoided by having a simple "enter registered details and we'll email your info" form :/

Anywho, this is a fairly cheap and nasty thing. Thank God it's my parents and not mine!!

(P.S. Logging in with Facebook on Firefox, I had to refresh the page to be properly logged in to submit comment. Not related to the printer, but surely you guys can code this page better.)

Bought this a couple of months ago. It has always been noisy and moves around so much whilst printing that the filing cabinet it is on rocks around. Touch pad is more like a Punch Pad due to having to push really hard to get it to work. Wireless drops out all the time and it takes forever to print anything, going through some kind of set up process. Now it has totally died, after starting to make an awful grinding noise as it prepared to print and I have a General Printing error that tells me to refer to the instructions, but there is not help there! Just on my way to take it back to the store and swap it for something else. Most likely the Lexmark Impact S305 rated at 8.3
