In the labs: BlackBerry Storm2

As Noah once said to his family and a boat load of animals, "Looks like there's a storm coming". This is also true for the CNET Australia office where Research in Motion's (RIM) latest touchscreen smartphone, the Storm2, has washed up on shore.

RIM has changed the touchscreen technology for this latest Storm, as you may have heard, in an attempt to hush the critics after the less-than favourable reception of its SureClick technology (read our review for more on SureClick). The team here at CNET AU liked the original more than most of our colleagues and competitors, though we agree there was definitely room for improvement.

We're sure there are plenty of you who will agree with this too, and we want to hear from you. We'd especially love to hear from owners of the original Storm or any current BlackBerry users. Just leave your comments in the talkback below.

Having used the Storm2 for just over 3 months and and upgrading to V5 428 release firmware. It is an efficient phone to use especially in business situations and in my opinion more so than an iPhone. Where I feel there could be improvement lies in the generally slow web browsing experience and when using "cut and paste".
After a week of I generally type faster on this phone than I have on other full qwerty KB phones.

Just waiting for a web browser update.

The original storm was an experiment and unfortunately full of bugs and issues. I was given a storm 2 from a friend who lives in the US and I've been using it every day for the past 3 months.

The storm 2 is a significant improvement from the original. The touch screen is highly responsive, quiet and bright. I find it easier and quicker to type on the new storm than on an iphone. The design looks fantastic and the device feels solid and firm.

I was initially disappointed upon receiving this phone as a gift after hearing all the negative news about the first storm. Three months later I can quite honestly say it's the most practical, reliable and best looking mobile I've used. It has all the functionality of the bold and all the good looks of the iphone.

I have the Storm for 15 months and it is a great phone especially after the OS 5 update. It is now as fast or faster than my brother's 3gs phone and I have not had any of the issues mentioned above.

From what I am reading from overseas the above complaints are relatively few and now less so after the latest os update.

I bought the Storm on a 24 month contract - like many others I am sure! 9 months in, and the phone has gone in for its 2nd repair job! Where to start, won't answer calls, won't ring, freezes up, won't alert to messages...the list goes on. After 10 years of happy Blackberry use, I really regret not listening to people and buying the Storm over the iPhone....

My wife has a Storm 1 she bought on contract. It sists in a draw while she uses an iPhone she bought outright. What a dog of a phone. I could use it as my work phone, but i stick to the 8310 Blackberry work gave me.
RIM should drop the Storm name for this and make sure its a much improved device.

I'm in the market for a new mobile and am strongly considering a Blackberry. Currently liking what I'm reading about the Bold 9700, but is the Storm 2 a worthy option compared to the 9700? Does is still freeze like the first Storm? And does it stack up against other touch screen based smartphones?
