InFocus IN72 projector

By Randolph Ramsay on 20 March 2006

Projector specialist InFocus has dropped the ScreenPlay tag from its home theatre line-up with the new -Play Big" range. The IN72 is the entry model in the series.

2.0

Upside
Taking some visual cues from the (extremely) high-end InFocus ScreenPlay 777, the projectors in the new "Play Big" range all share a similar sleek alien spaceship look. The IN72, InFocus' entry level model, is encased in a cool reflective black, with silver panels covering each side. If you plan on having your home projector out in the open, then you can't go wrong with the IN72's attractive design.

The IN72 is a DLP projector with a native 480p resolution (854x480 pixels) - which, while on the low side, can downscale up to 1080i signals without hassle. DLP technology generally means better blacks than LCD-based projectors, with the IN72 boasting a 2000:1 contrast ratio (full on/off). Other specifications include 900 ANSI lumens brightness, HDMI connector (as well as component, S-Video, Composite and DVI), and a six-segment colour wheel. InFocus says its dual mode 160/200W lamp has a 3000 hours average lifespan.

Downside
At the newly reduced price of AU$1999, the IN72 is a more affordable option for a native 480p projector, but similarly sized LCD projectors often feature better specifications, particularly when it comes to resolution. That said, the InFocus models do feature impressive build quality and components.

Outlook
We've been generally impressed with InFocus projectors in the past, and our early viewings of the IN72 looks set to continue that trend. We'll report more when we receive a review unit in for full testing.

Terrible. That sums it up. Had mine for 400 hours and fuse inside blew causing no picture. Had fuse replaced, Blew again. I am out $1400.

    • Good: Good picture when working.
    • Bad: Poor build quality. Did a search online and found many people in same boat as me with the "IN" series. You send in and it's $400 to fix with no guarantee. Buyer Beware!!! Company does not back product.
