We all know an iPad is better for reading in the dark and the Kindle better in the sunshine, but there are other considerations when choosing a tablet computer or E Ink reader over the other as your ebook reader. We weigh up the pros and cons of each.

Good idea to compare the two but it hardly scratched the surface. It should have been targeted at what sort of people could best utilise the hardware. But really, what sort of tragic do you have to be to own a kindle, an ipad, and a laptop?

What about those of us who dont have a wireless dongle and cheap contract??

Yep, have both aswell. I really don't think they are even worth comparing as their prices are so different. The kindle is fantastic at being an ebook reader (though I like the search function better on the kobo). The ipad is a games/fun machine. I get out the laptop if I want to do serious computing while in bed.

I've had a few people ask me what's the difference and which is better between a tablet and an E Ink reader, so obviously someone does think they are worth comparing :)

I think comparing them makes for a good article. A lot of people ask me which one to buy, therefore an article comparing the two was a good idea. Once the people asking the questions are correctly informed they will soon see that the Kindle and ipad are two completely different gadgets.

I have a Kindle and it's great. The ipad simply can't compare as an e-reader. The kindle is just the right size to hold with one hand as I read where as an ipad is always going to need two hands to hold comfortably when lying in bed.
The display is also infinitely more comfortable on the eyes and the battery life is unbeatable.
Free wireless delivery of books anywhere in the world is also brilliant. I was once on a long bus trip when I finished my book. Want to download another one? No problem, I was onto a new book in a matter of minutes. With the ipad you either need an expensive 3G internet contract (which will only work within one country/area) or you're going to need to search for some free wifi somewhere.

I am a HUGE apple addict, but to be honest....i use my kindle more than my iPad. I read from it (kindle) on the train and before bed. I'm 26 and a nerd, so it's not like i'm a middle aged lady that doesn't know anything about gadgets either. The ipad definitely has some uses...but i don't feel like it's all there yet. Since getting my iphone4 i tend to use that for everything i used to use my ipad for...the higher res screen makes it simple to do it all just on my phone.

I'm a psychology student so that requires a LOT of reading both academically and in my spare time to keep up with the latest in neuroscience and such...i find that the kindle works best for me from the ebook perspective.

its cheap and tiny and light - I can honestly say i love my kindle and have used it WAY more than my ipad, despite having only owned it a fraction of the time that ive had an iPad.

at the end, its really down to usability...what do you want the device to do, and what are your needs and wants?

They are both great tools that meet different requirements. If you want a tool purely for reading then in my opinion the Kindle is the clear winner. If on the other hand you want something for a richer experience [ie. surfing the net, vids, pics]and a little reading then the Ipad is the way forward.
