A fake iOS 7 ad mocked up by the internet seems to have convinced several people that a software update could make their phones waterproof.

"With the new features and ground-breaking innovation of iOS 7, your iPhone is able to instantly detect sudden changes in thermo-distribution with the touch-sensitive screen and home button," says an iOS 7 promotion doing the rounds on social media. "In an emergency, a smart switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry."

It looks the part, but there is one massive problem: the ad is a practical joke, probably originating from the depths of 4chan — and it's realistic enough to have some people fooled.

Of course, we're dubious about those who are tweeting about it, too, such as one Twitter user who posted that he'd thrown his iPhone in the river as a joke and the chap below who, after apparently trying it on his iPhone, went on to try it on his iPad (no one can be that silly, right?).

However, one Vine user seems to have been taken in, with a six-second video showing him running the phone under water, and this chap could be bona fide.

However, just as we would caution that you take anything that says software can have a physical effect on hardware with a grain of salt, we'd advise exactly the same for anything said on social media. Take this as it stands: as a silly, but very clever, joke with no confirmed victims.

Okay, well, yes... hmmm.
Have to say, the full ad does look the piece, full marks on doing a bang up job!
