High definition may be grabbing all the headlines at the moment, but not everyone is ready to make the leap to shooting in HD. Some just want a small, unobtrusive camcorder that records good-quality footage and doesn't cost the earth. These are exactly the type of people JVC is targeting with the Everio GZ-MG330, a hard-disk-based standard-definition shooter that's small enough to fit in even the tiniest of bags.

You can pick up the MG330 online for around AU$769, but has it got the pizzazz to stand out from other budget shooters?

Design
JVC was the first company to produce a hard-disk-based camcorder, but it's hardly alone now, with every manufacturer and their grandmother seemingly going down the hard disk route. Here JVC has responded by producing a smaller device with a lower price tag and offering it in a choice of four colours — red, silver, blue and black.

Naturally the camera has both auto and manual settings. There's not much to do in Auto mode apart from point and shoot, but the manual mode gives you plenty of control over the usual options, such as white balance and exposure. Moving through the menus is pretty straightforward and the camera features JVC's new easy-to-use Laser Touch Operation. This is basically a combination of touch buttons and a touch slider positioned on the top and side of the LCD screen.

Features
Hardcore videographers will bemoan the lack of an input for an external microphone and a headphone socket for monitoring recorded audio. Another oversight is the absence of an accessory shoe.

There's also the issue of it being limited to capturing standard-def material. SD has the advantage of being much faster and easier to edit on older, slower computers, but there's no denying that the world is rapidly making the move to high definition. You'd be hard pushed to find a non HD ready TV at your local electronics superstore, so the shelf life of this camcorder is probably going to be rather limited. But if you're more interested in uploading video to the internet than watching it back on a TV, this won't matter one bit.

Performance
This camcorder sits at the lower end of the latest JVC range, so it has a relatively small 30GB hard drive. As this is a standard-def model, however, the lower capacity isn't really an issue. Even at the highest quality recording mode it offers up seven hours of recording time — and anyone who can sit through that much home movie footage deserves a medal!

The camera actually has four different recording modes — Eco at 1.5Mbps, Norm at 4.2Mbps, Fine at 4.2Mbps and Ultra Fine at 8.4Mbps — and while the quality in Eco mode is rather crusty, the other modes produce impressive results. You'd be hard-pushed to spot much evidence of grain in the images on offer here and even in trickier darker areas of the picture the colour reproduction is very good. Thanks to the 35x optical zoom it's unlikely you'd miss much of the action even if you were standing on the moon.

While the MG330 shoots great-quality video, its CCD has a resolution of less than 1-megapixel, so it's rubbish when it comes to taking stills. In fact, the highest resolution still picture that it's capable of capturing is just 640x480 pixels, so forget about using it as a camera.

Conclusion
JVC has really hit a sweet spot with the petite and handsome Everio GZ-MG330. It shoots great quality standard-definition footage, has a long optical zoom range and is very easy to use.

    • Good: * DVD quality (not such a good shooting ONLY by night)
      * small, easy to use
    • Bad: * not so good, when filming by night
      * autofocus isn't so good

Like this camera a lot. I'm making my first amateur film with this camcorder.

    What a camcorder.
Great on Image quality and is packed with features.
Heaps of capacity and I can use Micro SD cards as well.

The software provided is fun as well with heaps of editing options. I ended up purchasing the sexy red one.

    • Good: Great size; Quick start; software is pretty good, especially for video/still camera to PC backup (one button touch); variable speed zoom. Has remote control (handy if tripod mounted)
    • Bad: Still quality poor at lesss than 1MP (640X480 pre-set ) The docking station does not come with this model; Video quality quite good, but not excellent

Purchased Christmas 2008. Great size, easy to setup and use. Video quality good, but at 8.xmbps (highest setting) not as good as I would have expected for SD format. Agree with other comments that still images are poor (specs show it is equivalent to "0.8" Megapixel. Some reviews say the hard disk is small at 30GB, but on the highest quality, it still gives over 7 hours of recording. Remember, the same size hard disk on a High Def model is about the same recording time due to higher quality. User manual for the 330 is basic, but enough for most functions. The touch screen (wich in fact is not the screen itself, but a slider and some buttons) is neat, but perhaps a little fiddly. Not overly impressed with the anti-shake function (comparing it with a 15y.o Canon tape camcorder with this function), so I was a bit disappointed here. I like the variable speed zoom in/out, depending how much pressure you place on the zoom lever.

      Looks good.

      Great Editing software.
    • Bad: Still shots were average, but its a camcorder designed for video quality.

I purchased one and I'm really happy with it. The image quality is excellent and the camcorder looks good as well.

    • Good: *It is small enough to fit in a little handbag.
      *It turns on really fast
*The computer program that it came with is really good, and quite easy to learn but to do some of the things on it you have to buy a program. :(
      *Is easy to use.
*The still mode is allright (I'm not too critical about my photos, so to me they weren't as bad as the other reviews stated) but if you take a photo at night or in artificial light it is near impossible to get an un-blurred image.
      *It is comfortable to hold.
*I got mine really cheap on ebay ($450) but the only thing was that it came from hong kong so it had a japanese powerpoint plug on the charger. They sent me an adapter though, so it's all good!
*It was really easy to get started with. I took it out of the box, turned it on and started filming!!!
    • Bad: *When taking a photo or filming at night or in artificial light, the quality is really poor. This is probobly the only real fallback I've noticed with this camcorder. At night or in artificial light, it is really hard to get an unblurred still and you get a blurred trail in movies.
*On the computer program, to use some of the tools you have to buy a program seperately (grrrrr).

This is my first camcorder and I am very happy with it. It is very handy and slick to use and I
