Say the phrase "action camera" to most casual observers, and they'll immediately assume you're talking about a GoPro. That name comes with a wealth of brand association and affection, with the tiny camera being used for stunts ranging the gamut from synchronised skydiving to swimming with predators of the sea.

Kogan wants to take a slice of the lucrative action-camera pie with its own version, simply called the Full HD Action Camera. On the outside, it looks pretty unassuming, with rounded edges, exposed ports and small operation buttons.

Design and features

The camera comes in a waterproof case that can withstand depths of up to 30 metres and drops of up to 2 metres. Like most other action cameras, the Kogan version records in full 1080p at 30 fps, dropping down to 720p at 60fps. Its lens has a field of view of 170 degrees, on par with competitors like the Sony ActionCam and GoPro. There is a 1.5-inch colour display at the back for framing and reviewing footage.

The Action Camera has a few more external controls than the other cheap mini cameras we have tested, such as the Kaiser Baas X80. At the back, there are navigation buttons, while the top panel houses dedicated video and stills recording buttons.

The Black Edition of the Action Camera comes with several mounts in the box, including a handlebar mount, helmet mount and suction-cup mount. There are also two adhesive mounts enclosed. They all attach to the waterproof case, which is a little bulkier than the streamlined GoPro housings. A remote control is also included in the box.

There are a variety of scene modes to choose from, including night, sports and landscape. Otherwise, you can leave the camera on automatic (which is its default setting anyway). Adjustments can also be made to the ISO, metering and volume levels. Note that the date stamp is on by default, so make sure to turn it off if you don't want it affecting your video and still images.

The battery door underneath the camera was a little loose on our review model, which could result in the battery popping out if there was a sudden jolt. Your mileage may vary.

Connectivity is provided via mini HDMI and micro USB. It also accepts microSD cards for recording footage, up to 32GB. The battery is rated for 2.5 hours.

Image and video quality

The video footage is of reasonable quality for an action camera in this price bracket. Colours are nicely saturated on default settings.

The digital image stabilisation system doesn't do that much to compensate for lots of camera movement and does introduce a small degree of wobble to the image.

There is some fringing and chromatic aberration visible on still and video images. This becomes especially noticeable on areas of high and low contrast. For example, trees against the sky can have halo effects, while purple fringing is sometimes noticeable.

During recording, the screen turns itself off. You can see that the camera is still recording, though, thanks to the flashing LED on the back of the device.

Audio recording is decent. Though the sound is muted while in the waterproof case, it is still much clearer than the other two cameras we tested, the X80 and Navig8r Sports Camera.

Conclusion

If you are on a budget, the Kogan Action Camera is one of the best buys under AU$150.

"Good for the price."

The Good:The Waterproof housing is waterproof; video, image quality ok, Sweet price

The Bad:Battery life.

Kogan action camera Black edition.

Was a bit worried reading all the reviews claiming that the waterproof housing leaks as I bought this unit to take with me on my surfing trips. Tested unit in my pool for a few minutes, no leaks, went for a short surf still no leaks, so all OK so far. Only gripe the remote was supplied with a flat battery inserted, changed and remote works fine. Battery life a bit ordinary definitely not 2.5 hours as claimed. Video and image quality is what you can expect from a camera that is so cheap, in saying that it is still pretty good. Only used for the weekend so far will post another if the situation changes.

"Leaked immediately"

The Good:Nothing

The Bad:Useless for intended purpose

I bought 2 of these for my sons for christmas with the intent of using them on our christmas holidays. BOTH cases leaked within 5 minutes of paddling about in the water. The second you pressed the button on top water rushed in. Both cameras ruined. Very disappointing as this was kids 'big' present, plus purchased accessories. Purchased primarily based on this review and a couple others. On the merry-go-round with Kogan now re: refund. Will update. So far VERY SLOW to respond. Not impressed.

I bought the Black Edition and took it t Figi with the family and it failed in the first minute when I took it in the water. The "waterproof" housing is not waterproof at all. However, Kogan did replace the camera under warranty. When the second camera arrived I conducted a simple test and submerged the "waterproof" case only in a bucket of water only to find water leaked into the case within a few minutes. I am currently waiting on a response from Kogan to find out if I can get a refund as the product is not performing anywhere near what is claimed.

"Pathetic offering"

The Good:when it works, it's okay

The Bad:The main issue is with the battery not sitting in the camera securely, which means it becomes disconnected as the slightest bump causing the camera to power off. Sometimes it will only turn on if pressure is applied to the battery door. Also other issues.

This camera is of very poor build quality, it is a waste of your money and time. Do not buy it. The main issue is with the battery not sitting in the camera securely, which means it becomes disconnected as the slightest bump causing the camera to power off. Sometimes it will only turn on if pressure is applied to the battery door. I have contacted Kogan for a refund but they have not got back to me yet, I'm hoping their refund policy is better than their product.

I purchased a Black Edition camera in October it has never worked in either photo or video modes. It will not save any changes to the date. Kogans online help and support pages are useless. I think I have thrown away $139, plus $19 for an extended 3 year warranty.

"rubbish"

JarvisC posted a review

I purchased this camera two weeks ago, i have used a go pro for surfing for two years without any problems, the very first time i used the kogan action camera the waterproof housing failed within 30 seconds, the camera was ruined and unfortunately kogan will not refund me as they can claim it as a user error, after the event i tested the waterproof housing in a sink of fresh water and had the same result.

very dissapointed with the housing, the camera seemed great i hope no one else has the same problem as i did.

Hi Jarvis, we haven't seen this issue come up before. In fact, we've had reviewers test the camera in water and it has worked perfectly (it's made for this!). Can you please tell us what the order ID is or your full name?

hi Iggy. I also bought one and had the same problem with staying on. I found out that the problem was only the battery sitting loose inside. so I just put a strip of adhesive foam on the bottom of the battery to make it sit tight and it works great, I haven't had a problem since. Its a great camera and a heaps good deal. The following link just shows one of the videos I've made with it in 1080p. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD8XQFpIHSQ

Bought one which turned up yesterday, now going through the challenges of how to return it. Problems with staying on - assume a problem with the battery or charging circuit, Will stay on for a bout a minute on photo, so did a couple of photos and every photo has pixel distortion. Now procrastinating on what to do, as I have no confidence I will ever get it to work, but end up out of pocket as I to pay freight both ways to change to something else. Was thinking of going to a Gopro. In hindsight, I should have bought Gopro local, would have saved money and time. And it was supposed to be my Fathers day present

Will be suprised to see Kogan can compete with image quality.

Remembering back to your comparison video of the GoPro, Sony and Contour... the quality of some of them were poor.

Look forward to see how it goes, hope it looks better than the Kogan coffee machine tasted.
