Design

Kogan's second stab at a combined DAB+ radio, iPod dock and internet radio streamer won't go on sale until 16 July, but we managed to nab an early production unit to review.

If there's a constant criticism we've had of much of Kogan's output over the past couple of years, it's that the build quality of most units has been on the poorer side. It's never easy to tell simply by looking at a picture of a Kogan unit, either, and as there's no retail presence save online for Kogan products, that's often not enough. The first combination Wi-Fi Digital Radio and iPod Dock offered a lot of functionality for its asking price, but did so in a cheap plastic box with a single mono speaker, which ruined its appeal.

Second time out, however, we reckon whichever Chinese factory actually pumps out Kogan's products has largely got it right. Significantly larger than the first generation dock, the Kogan Wi-Fi Digital Radio DAB with iPhone Docking Station Deluxe looks quite good for an iPod dock in this price range. It's not as snazzy as, say, the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini, but it's equally nowhere near as expensive. The one odd factor in the main unit's construction is that the two 30W speakers are side rather than front mounted, which could lead to some interesting echo effects if you were planning on popping it into a cabinet of any kind.

While we liked the simple aesthetic of the unit, we can't say the same for the remote control, which was of the flat, credit-card-sized variety. It's not terrible, but it is ordinary and a bit hard to always get working right.

Features

It's not too often that the name of a product describes everything that it does. Does an iPod "pod"? Does Microsoft Word "word"? Does a Vaio do ... whatever it is Vaioing is? Probably not.

But the title alone of the Kogan Wi-Fi Digital Radio DAB with iPhone Docking Station Deluxe does cover most of its major features. If we wanted to be picky (which clearly we do, otherwise we wouldn't be writing this), we should point out that it should read "DAB+", but that's minor nitpicking. It's an iPod/iPhone dock, DAB+ radio and Wi-Fi music streamer from local UPnP sources and internet radio stations. If you have access to music in just about any format, you can play it through this. You're not limited to Wi-Fi only, either, as the unit comes with a standard Ethernet port at the back to connect up to your network. A good thing, too, as entering a network password from the unit's orange OLED display is a rather tiresome chore if you don't utilise WPS for a one-button set-up.

Performance

Audio performance was an area where Kogan's previous Wi-Fi dock did itself no favours at all. Like many budget DAB+ units, the inclusion of mono speakers left us wanting a whole lot more. We're not going to say that the Kogan Wi-Fi Digital Radio DAB with iPhone Docking Station Deluxe left us with a new appreciation for all of our music due to its crystal clear audio transmission, because that wouldn't be true. Equally, though, we weren't forced to run screaming from it with bleeding ears due to truly awful speakers. As a desk-based unit, we found it perfectly acceptable for audio playback from a connected iPod or iPhone. On the DAB+ front, the rather compressed and flat nature of most DAB+ broadcasts was rather painfully evident, but that's not this unit's fault. The inclusion of both local streaming from any connected and compliant source gives the Docking Station Deluxe nice flexibility, as does internet radio. Every time you feel like slapping, say, Kyle Sandilands in the face, instead of potentially putting yourself in jail, just relax with some cool Cajun jazz piped direct from New Orleans instead.

The only real problem we hit with the Docking Station Deluxe related to the remote control. Like most small remotes it's not terribly good. Button presses sometimes failed to be picked up, and we often just used the physical controls on the Docking Station Deluxe instead. It's also got the peculiar quirk that it clearly shares a lot of its remote codes with a number of other remote manufacturers. We inadvertently managed to variously switch the radio on and off with other remotes, as well as adjust volume and change channels while performing other tasks in the same area. That again isn't exactly the Docking Station Deluxe's fault, but it's worth keeping in mind if you're going to use it in an area where lots of other IR remote signals are pinging around.

Conclusion

Kogan's mantra has long been "Cheap before everything else", and that doesn't always equate to the same thing as "value for money". Thankfully, the Kogan Wi-Fi Digital Radio DAB with iPhone Docking Station Deluxe is value for money, and pretty good value for money at that. It's not a high-end audio solution for iPod, DAB or internet Radio, but as a combination unit at a very appealing price point, it offers a great deal.

"Rich sound, great look. To me all the other radios look like poor relations."

The Good:I'm right into the good sound and ease of working.

The Bad:Not a thing.

This is something.

Really good to listen to. This is the most satisfying product I've bought. I walked the shops and saw ugliness in the digital radios everywhere. Few of them had all the features. And the prices went up and up even with quite ordinary machines.

A handful of very fine reviews online for the Kogan Deluxe tipped me into their customer list for the first time. How glad I am. Now I will use a word my fingers are scared to type … love. I love this thing. Deeply, madly, fad-ly.

And … how important is this?… it looks so very beautiful in an almost Zen way. No frills of design here. Its line is right in a simple way. The gloss finish is terrific. If you jump with excitement for cheap frills, go elsewhere. But it's your ears you'll be neglecting. The sound is just so good. It is hard for me to believe I've been missing this quality and listening to that inferior broadcast sound of analogue for all these decades. I have a funny feeling that the unusual speaker arrangement actually does some something to make the sound even better. It's so rich.

So then, get a Kogan Deluxe. And for a pin money price. Dear me. Whap the plastic down and thank me.

The Good:Spectacular gadget with amazing sound, impressive list of functions and fantastic price! fantastic price!

The Bad:NO

Hi All,
Bought it from e-bay Kogan's store few days ago. I have huge professional experience in audio (studio work regular hardware experience) and from my background prospective I try to find something really usable for my home audio needs. When I switch ON first time my new Kogan I understood - this is DREAM DEVICE!!!

1) Sound power - for regular use you can switch 5 - 6 from 20!! Only 5 - 6, because over 6 you can start your Friday home party! Great power reserves allow to do everything you like (for example support with good music your house cleaning with noisy vacuum cleaner).

2) Fantastic bass and treble! Guys from Kogan organize sound drivers in very smart way - two side dynamics provide powerful main flow bass cover all middle range bass channel on the bottom provide spectacular low bass. Never seen something powerful like this in so compact version! Twitter on front cover all spectre of hi level frequencies and working as a Hi Fi finish on top of global sound picture! I will say again - for so compact device sound picture quality with no doubts is 20 stars from 10!

3) Great display! Look like hi-res colour drawing on black paper - 100% visible for all ages and remind about BMW or Audi information panel (I mean square pixels style and picture quality)

4) Choice of functions cover all needs - perfect Internet radio, 100% with Ipod/Iphone, DAB and FM as an additional bonus. Alarm Snooze Calendar Great big number clock! Menu is user friendly and very well organized and I am sure - for most part of users Kogan menu is understandable without any manual! Internet radio is organized on hi level - you can choose from genre, country, etc. Impressed fast connection over Wi Fi and also helpful automatic upgrade over network function!

5) Stylish design and very well organized function buttons.

I really like it and satisfied with all functions, design and build quality for 200%!!

Would like recommend KOGAN Internet DAB De Luxe for everyone who try to find some good quality replacement for laptop sound and also like to switch off computer without missing music and news. For Ipod/Iphone users -must have device with great range of everyday functions.

Regards,
Rudolf.

Great sound and good features and value for money. But I haven't heard anybody comment on the long signal delay, approx 10 to 20 seconds, compared to an analog radio

The Good:Value for Money, Ease of set-up, Sound quality.

The Bad:Iphone 4.0 integration

Also preordered and very happy with it. Set up was quite easy and connected to wifi within a few minutes and internet radio. DAB works well.

Iphone connectivity was great with the 3GS but do get the message that it will not provide full functionality and Phone wants asks if you want to go into airplane mode. Choose no and plays and charges without any issues.

With iphone 4.0 phone states that this is a unsupported device but still plays and charges well.

The Good:Excellent value for money

The Bad:Side set speakers are a bit odd but doesn't seem to stop this little thing having good bang for buck

Pre-ordered this little beastie as I was looking for a bedside table radio/iPod dock. I listen to loads of radio so the fact that it had DAB+ & internet radio was a major bonus. Not found anything like it elsewhere online.

The sound across all the sources is excellent for a tiny cheap box. Far better than expected (have yet to try FM - not much point really).

Have to disagree about the credit card sized remote - lovely, doesn't clutter up my space, easy to find & easy to use.

Was ready to be fully disappointed soundwise comparing this box to my beautiful audiophile lounge room system but for a small space it stacks up beautifully.

The display gives you the option of 3 brightness settings. Even on low husband thinks it's too bright. But he loves a completely dark room. Doesn't bother me slightly.
