Laptops with long battery life

Craig was sucked into the endless vortex of tech at an early age, only to be spat back out babbling things like "phase-locked-loop crystal oscillators!". Mostly this receives a pat on the head from the listener, followed closely by a question about what laptop they should buy.

Unless you're buying a desktop replacement, battery life is arguably the key consideration in any notebook purchase.

Being stranded up the proverbial creek without any battery power is a harsh reality of mobile computing, and can be particularly scathing if you've got an important presentation due and aren't within reach of a power socket.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of recent laptops we've seen which have demonstrated battery life above the norm, from the tiny netbook all the way up to the desktop replacement.

I'd bang Ubuntu Lucid on it...And have the best laptop there is, at present.

Guys, you forgot an important point;
those pc laptops you listed (ASUS UL, Acer Timeline) have a much weaker processor than the MBP. The Intel SU series (ASUS/Acer) eat only 10 watts, but according to this they can go only up to 1.4GHz. The T series processors (used by Apple) eat 35 W, but run at 2.8 GHz. Put a T series processor to your ASUS/ Acer laptop and your battery life will not be longer than 3 hours, which is not even close to that of the Macbooks. If you want to browse the web and take notes those PC laptops are fine, that's true. I need both computing power and battery life. In this combination the Macbooks and Pros are still unbeatable.

This list does need an update. the best laptop for battery life is the asus UL range. I have the UL80vt and I get 10+ hours battery life using it non-stop doing uni work etc. and keeping wireless on and screen brightness at about 50%. The power of it is also great and will do anything you want except play hard core games. (but you need a $5000 laptop to play those). The bad comments about the UL80vt and others in that range are untrue. You'll only be 'unhappy' with the UL80vt if you're one of those wanky people that think there is nothing better than an overpriced macbook.

Okay, I'm one of those wanky people who have (not overpriced) macbooks - but I also have an Asus UL80vt - along with a couple of Asus netbooks, an Acer Travelmate and a Dell XPS16, so I'm an equal opportunity macbook ****
That said, I've never been able to get more than 7.5 hrs out of my UL80...and that's with WiFi and bluetooth switched off and with the screen on 50%.

my dell e4300 is brillant
with battery slice it is rated at 10 hours, but I reckon it gives 6 hours of high power use, I reckon it would give 10 hours of power saving use
