Toshiba Qosmio User reviews

By Tim Dean on 11/01/2005

More Toshiba PC reviews , RRP: AU$5999.00

The good:

  • Incredibly well equipped for just about any productivity or entertainment tasks

The bad:

  • Large, heavy and pricey

The bottomline:

Very impressive technology, with a strange double role, and a price tag that matches its massive size

Users' rating:

8.3/10

Solid performer with a few quirks

I love the composite and s-video input (direct to screen), but capturing these in Windows is not supported except for the basic video editing software supplied (No response from Toshiba on this issue). Also cannot view copy-protected VHS through 'direct' A/V input. Nice machine.

Impossible to install Fedora

Although it's an excellent computer if you only use Windows, you run into problems if you want to install Linux on it. It's impossible to dual boot Fedora and XP because of the embedded Linux on the system which is required for the MediaCenter.

Problematic

Bought this unit back in November 2004. Was satisfied until this year when the DVD writer started acting up. I've been burning coasters ever since (DVD+R and -R) and Toshiba helpdesk wasn't much of a help. They said the drive had problems with TDK 8x DVD but I haven't had any joy with any media for a while. My previous VAIO was much slower but I never had to deal with media incompability as much as this one.
For such a dear price, I had expected more.

Good, But no QosmioPlayer...

Having brought one of the first G10 (2.0GHz/1 Gb/160Gb HDD) I was dissapointed with what it can't do.

We all know there's no EPG, but one of the **10** Addendums that you find in the paper-work is that the Qosmio TV player is not supported !!

So, any thoughts about NOT having to boot into Windows are out the window (so to speak !).

I am still stumbling through Windows Media Centre, there appears to be NO instructions, printed or otherwise.

If you don't need the TV features it's one hell of a great computer ! If you want (or need) TV features, look else-where....
