Dell Inspiron 6400 User reviews

By Asher Moses on 12/07/2006

More Dell reviews , RRP: AU$3189.00

The good:

  • Affordable
  • Impressive general performance
  • Great battery life for a desktop replacement
  • Bright, high-resolution screen
  • Instant-on DVD payback feature
  • 5-in-1 card reader

The bad:

  • Hefty weight and dimensions
  • Poor gaming performance
  • Some minor design quirks

The bottomline:

The Inspiron 6400 is a mid-range notebook with an entry-level price tag. It’ll handle most applications nicely, but it’s a little on the heavy side and isn’t suitable for extensive gaming.

This is a robust workhorse of a laptop. When it comes to weight, it's a little heavier than a Sony. When it comes to slim-line design, its drastically overweight compared to a mac.

But none of that diminshes the fact that it is a good, long term, robust and reliable portable PC. The room isn't wasted either, with plenty of ports, a rock solid dvd player, good internal speakers and a front panel that is actually handy, despite my initial view that i would never really use it.

Furthermore, that extra bulk gives great heat disbursement. The bottom of this laptop never really gets that hot and you can always actually use it on your lap. Some slim line laptops get hot enough to fry an egg underneath.

Stability, display and battery life are top rate and despite its size, it's still very portable.

If you like a good computer on your travels, I recommend this sort of laptop. If you prefer something a little easier to carry, but with shortcomings, this one ain't for you!

Pros: - Battery life is good.
- Suprisingly portable.
- Excellent desktop substitute.
- Robust nature.
- Remains very cool underneath. Never too hot and cool enough to use resting on your lap.
- Reliable.
- DVD playback and monitor quality is great.
- Plenty of features and ports.
- Well priced
- Warranty great.

Cons: - Finish of the plastic covering looks cheap.
- Bulky - but I like that actually.

I've had a 6400 for almost a couple of years now. It has served me very well :-) I use it all the time and th only problem has been the hinges of the screen. I should get them fixed.. maybe a DIY job?

Pros: Value for money
Good resolution on screen
Overall great machine

Cons: A very plastic, flimsy construction
Hinges became loose

After one year I had to change the HD twice, the scream and the battery once and the power supply twice. Every thing was replaced in few days by Dell due the warranty.

Pros: Good computer for a good price
