Dell Inspiron 6400 User reviews

By Asher Moses on 12/07/2006

More Dell reviews , RRP: AU$3189.00

The good:

  • Affordable
  • Impressive general performance
  • Great battery life for a desktop replacement
  • Bright, high-resolution screen
  • Instant-on DVD payback feature
  • 5-in-1 card reader

The bad:

  • Hefty weight and dimensions
  • Poor gaming performance
  • Some minor design quirks

The bottomline:

The Inspiron 6400 is a mid-range notebook with an entry-level price tag. It’ll handle most applications nicely, but it’s a little on the heavy side and isn’t suitable for extensive gaming.

Just bought this superb laptop; absolutely wonderful and in many ways; hard to believe you can get a laptop that has a duo core processor and 1024 Mb of RAM and its all topped up with DVD RW, 256 ATI Radeon X1400 graphics card. These are just some of the greats of this laptop; one huge bargain is the 120 GB hard drive space. Immense for the price!! Dell have done a great job and i can use it for a huge 4 hrs without recharging.

[All for £499 baby!!]

Pros: Great entertainment laptop with an unbelievable price;
Vista ready;
15.4" monitor;
pretty nice design;
and a lot more!!!!

Cons: the weight is a slight problem and the gaming could be slightly better!

My 6400 plays :
Serious Sam 2, Battlefield 2142, Warcraft III, NFS Carbon and many other games just fine at 1280x800x32bit
I think many problems arise, from the
restore partition, since partitions do drop HDD performance some. Go with the 7200RPM sata HDD, as it won't slow your games down like the 5200rpm HDD will!
If you go into the BIOS & set the HDD for Performance, and Get Powerstrip for the ATI X1400, you can get great framerates, with all games...I think this Desktop replacement, is underestimated. My 6400 scored 1,200 points higher in 3dmarks 2001SE,
With
XP pro SP2B
Duo 2 Core 2.16Ghz
2GB DDR 667Mhz
100GB SATA HDD 7200RPM
256MB ATI X1400 using 128MB of shared DDR 667
than my desktop
XP Pro SP2
ABIT NF7 S2G MOBO
3200+ 400FSB(barton)
1GB OCZ PC 3200 Dual-Channel
2x 250GB WD Cavier SE 7200rpm in SATA RAID 0
258MB BFG 6800GT 385Core/1022Mem
(2044Mhz in double data rate)
A13 BIOS is a must!!!

Pros: Plays a 3 hour DVD, and then gives you time for some NFS Carbon, on battery before charging!!!

Sound System With
Creative Audigy Advanced MB software, is a bonus when hooked up to any 2.1 to 7.1 surround sound external speakers. You can hook up a Keyboard, & plug in a guitar through it, use the Advanced MB soundbank manager to make all kinds of music...

Cons: It is a bit heavy, if you are small or weak, it isn't for you

My PCTV capture card does not work in Widescreen..Not Dell's Fault

Great buy - I received this laptop for Christmas, and have had zero problems. It does get a little warm, but what laptop doesn't? I just prop it up on something if i'm going to be using it for a large block of time so that the heat has somewhere to go. Also, someone mentioned that they didn't like the screen brightness for when it was not plugged in - that can easily be remedied by holding the FN button and the up arrow. The entire computer is simple to use

Pros: -Vista ready
-Bright screen
-pretty great sound
-easy to type on the keyboard

Cons: - i can't seem to figure out how to make the audio buttons on the front of the laptop change songs when my music player isn't up. for example, i have to have itunes as the focal window in order to hit next song on the the physical buttons.

This is my 3rd Dell Laptop. Price wise and reliability, I would not but anything else.

Pros: Hard to beat price wise and cheap to option. You will be hard pressed trying to find one in store for the same money.

Cons: Plastics have a cheaper feel compared to other brands.

Very nice laptop, i first bought a P105 from toshiba, but got stolen, then i opted for the inspiron 6400, and i am glad i got that one. Toshiba is much more bulkyer.

Pros: Good battery life, great display, nice speed.

Cons: Not too good for gaming, no IRDA, and mostly ExpressCard is not standard.
