Dell Inspiron 6400 User reviews

By Asher Moses on 12/07/2006

More Dell reviews , RRP: AU$3189.00

The good:

  • Affordable
  • Impressive general performance
  • Great battery life for a desktop replacement
  • Bright, high-resolution screen
  • Instant-on DVD payback feature
  • 5-in-1 card reader

The bad:

  • Hefty weight and dimensions
  • Poor gaming performance
  • Some minor design quirks

The bottomline:

The Inspiron 6400 is a mid-range notebook with an entry-level price tag. It’ll handle most applications nicely, but it’s a little on the heavy side and isn’t suitable for extensive gaming.

So far so excelent

Pros: Cheap, with AUD1800 I got a 1.87GHz Dual Core, ATI X1400 256Mb, 1 Gb DDR, Bluetooth, Wifi, card reader, Firewire. For other brands, it would had cost me around AUD2500 for the same specs. Ive been using it for 6 months for extensive CAD, and so far its been excelent, no bluescreen nor hang, very stable. Its trully a desktop replacment. The keyboard is excelent, speaker volume is great too. The restore application is working superbly. I recommended 6400 for students or professionals who need performance instead of big brand overpriced laptops.

Cons: Heat problem, especially for applications which require max GPU utilization (or it is a common sense for laptops?). If you want resume it from standby, must press media direct button, a bit odd. Headphone jack's and memory card slot's position are too near to eachother. Should be better in black and plain minimalist style.

Good performer

Pros: Solid performer and great price, had my 6000 for more than 18 months now and my sister just brought the 6400 with 1GB RAM, Duo T2600 and case for $1350, awesome value.

Cons: Little heavy at 2.8kg

Best Value Notebook around, period.

My configuration for the Inspiron 6400 came in at $1526.

This included:

Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz
1GB 533MHz ram
128MB Mobility Radeon X1400
Glossy 15.4" screen
9-Cell battery

and a free carry case...

Simply put, this is the best value notebook currently on the market, I'd know because I spent three months researching before I bought my machine. It has the graphics power good enough to play Oblivion and any other game currently out there on comfortable settings. It has the battery life to easily carry me the three hours I spend each day travelling to university. The speakers are also good enough to hear in a crowded room, although there is little bass.

If you are on a budget, you don't need to go any further than this. It performs better than many $2500 offerings from other vendors.

Pros: 5 Hour battery life with upgrade
Excellent graphics performace
Great touchpad
Nice speakers
Great value

Cons: A little fat
Everybody has one

Great! And also honest design

Pros: Dell Inspiron 6400 with it's honest and fantastic design (industrial design i mean), is to stand above Sony. I am not really engaged with technical information, but this model is an answer to all my needs as a professor of Art History (dealing with slides and documentary movies). Besides, Inspiron 6400 is perfectly designed. nothing extra, nothing's missing.

Cons: Friends in Dell Corp. should leave Intel, and choose AMD.

Great buy

I bought my Inspiron 6400 in May 2006 and I think it was a great buy. The performance is fine, including gaming performance. I think the review must have only been talking about the version that comes with integrated graphics because gaming is quite good using the X1400 card. In Oblivion I got best results with the lowest graphics settings - it was a little slow at the higher settings, but that is because of the limitations of the X1400. Maybe Dell should offer X1600 cards instead of the X1400. If you're really serious about gaming then you should get a desktop anyway.
The appearance of the computer is fine as far as I'm concerned.

Pros: Excellent specs for the money. I bought an Inspiron 6400 in May 2006. For $2000 I got:
Intel Core Duo T2400 processor
1GB (2x512MB) RAM at 667MHz
80GB hard drive at 7200rpm
ATI Mobility X1400 graphics card
8X DVD+/-RW dual layer
+ more.

Cons: A bit heavier than I thought it would be.
