The Inspiron 1420 is sure to make a lot of people happy -- it manages to pack in a lot of power for a good price. If you're a gamer though, go for a higher model.

I've had this laptop for just over a year now, and it's been absolutely great. I bring it with me to uni every day, use it on public transport, and have not treated it particularly gently (I've dropped it from about knee height once), but everything still works!
I got the 9-cell battery which typically runs for about 4 hours +, depending on what applications are open. This is with wireless on and screen brightness quite high. I guess the integrated graphics card saves some energy.
My touchpad stopped working about 1 month after I got the laptop, while I was overseas. Dell provided great customer service, and sent out a technician to completely replace the touchpad within 3 days - even though I had not paid for the international or additional warranty (my warranty was the most basic cheap one).
Overall, very happy with this laptop. Don't know why the other users have had complaints.
Pros: Great battery life, strong and sturdy build, sleek design, quiet
Cons: 9-cell battery very slow to charge with standard charger, DVD drive noisy, Vista is a pain.

Have had the 1420 for now 12 months. Sure that this was the wrong choice now after having to trailer this 2kg beast around university.
Pros: -Battery life (6 cell battery)
Cons: -Heavy
-Chunky
-Finish on laptop impossible to keep clean
-Static through headphone port
-Extremely hot operating temp
-Had multiple problems with the charger and its temp
-Video card does not work when connected to external monitor. Dell will not help!

I have had the 1420 for 4 months and it has had to be completely reloaded due to a system error. The DVD drive did not work after the reload and several fixes had to be applied. The media direct did not work because the Dell rep forgot to load it before reloading the system - Media Direct has to be installed before the operating system or it will never work. The Bluetooth radio goes off every time the power is turned off and you have to reinstall every bluetooth device including the mouse every time you want to use them. A fix was installed by Dell but then subsequent Dell fixes overlayed the fix and it is broken again. Dell would not allow me to download and catalog the fixes so I have to sit on their phone or chat to get the fix again. Webcam just went away one day after running a quicktime video.
Pros: Nice light weight. Fast enough for me. Good screen size and resolution. DVD works well once the drivers are loaded correctly. Bluetooth hooks up to all devices I have tried without problem once the radio is on.
Cons: Webcam has serious echo and the camera just goes away - once after running a Quicktime video. Had to reload from original CD. Now need to reload updates but the Dell site thinks I already have the fixes. Ugh

Just arrived, very nice looks and runs fine. The webcam with auto detection is very cool. Only current issue is that the Disk Drive isn't detecting disks :S
Pros: Sleek look, webcam, ram, HD, price.
Cons: windows Vista :S
Non working Disk drive (will get technical support to fix it tho)

Just purchased the Dell Inspiron 1420 after months of deliberating over which laptop would serve me well for 3 years study. Very impressed with the build quality and feature set it offers. With 1.8GHz, 2GB, 160GB hd, NVIDIA graphics, Office student and 3 years cover, all for under $2,000. Highly recommend this system.
