Lexmark X3470

By Asher Moses on 03 May 2006

Attractive and feature-rich, the X3470 is a great mid-range photo printer.

User rating:3.7
  • RRP: AU$79.00

Upside
The X3470's price tag -- AU$129 -- puts it in the mid-range segment, but the printer can certainly compete with premium offerings in terms of features.

For starters, it's incredibly small. At 375.92 by 314.96 by 152.4 mm (tray retracted), the X3470 is by far the most compact all-in-one printer we've seen yet.

Its regular colour and black printing functions are, on paper, similar to that of its younger siblings, the X1270 and X2470. The unit sports a maximum print resolution of 4800x1200 dpi, and can print colour or text documents at a speed of up to 17 pages per minute.

Yet the main attraction is its photo printing capabilities. These include a PictBridge port and multi-format memory card reader (for PC-less printing), as well as Lexmark photo editing software that features one-touch red-eye removal and colour fixing. Lexmark promises that the X3470 can produce a borderless 4x6-inch print in 38 seconds.

Another handy feature is the backlit LCD display, which makes the printer far easier to use.

Interestingly, the printer uses a single ink cartridge that produces both colour and black inks. This makes maintenance far simpler, as you'll only need to change one cartridge as opposed to multiple cartridges when the ink runs dry.

The "Web toolbar" function is perhaps the X3470's most interesting software feature. It enables users to print Web pages in just a few clicks, and you're able to eliminate advertisements and other unwanted elements before printing. A handy feature to say the least.

Being an "all-in-one" model, the X3470 also boasts colour scanning (flatbed) and copying features. It'll scan at a resolution of up to 600x1200 ppi, and copying is super speedy at 15 copies per minutes.

It's got a paper capacity of 100 sheets, while Lexmark's "Accu-feed" paper handling system "virtually eliminates paper jams", according to the company.

Compared to competing printer manufacturers, the X2470's LexExpress warranty with second business day exchange is very impressive.

Downside
Like most Lexmark printers, the X2470 doesn't support the Mac OS operating system.

Outlook
Attractive and feature-rich, the X3470 is a great mid-range photo printer.

    • Good: Nice features and easy to use...when it works!
    • Bad: Does this mean bad things or is it the nickname of the sales rep who takes your money?

Wish I'd have seen this site before I bought. Used the first one, changed the ink and it wouldn't work. Took that back; got another one on exchange. Changed ink, 'cover open' issue. One thing for sure, if the one you have doesn't work, they'll give you another just like it.....it doesn't work either.

    • Good: Fairly small unit.... won't take much room in the garbage can.
    • Bad: More junk for the landfill.

Worked for 2 cartridges, then went terminal during third (expensive) cartridge. This is my third and last Lexmark printer...forever.

    • Good: There aren't any when the printer is so poorly put together and the company knows it. This could have been fixed long ago.
    • Bad: Company has to know there is a problem and continues to sell defective merchandise. What a sad way to take care of your customers unless all you care about is the almighty dollar.

I agree that the co. owes us more than a printer that works a few times and then says cover open. If we all have the same prob. then they will have a prob when no one goes back to buy from them again. Shame on you Lexmark!!!

    • Good: If you can get it to actually keep working, it's a nice little all in one device.
    • Bad: The "cover open" deal is a very widespread problem, and when it actually does work, you have to sit next to it and feed the paper through manually or it will print crooked.

Same problem as everyone else. Changed the ink cartridge, and now the cover is apparently perpetually open...even when it's closed. I now have a useless printer with a brand new ink cartridge.

I loved this printer until the second time I changed the print cartridge. For no apparent reason, the "cover open" sensor was tripped, and that locked up the machine, just as other have described. Do NOT be lured by the seemingly reasonable price for this printer. I haven't even had it for six months, and it's junk.

    • Good: Good to kick to relief stress. It's so cheap it won't even hurt you.
    • Bad: Just don't buy Lexmark.

Broke first time I changed ink cartdrige. Kept saying cover was open even if closed. After a long time when I decided to throw ir away, I discovered the small cheap plastic thing that was supposed to push the button when the lid was closed. Searching the net, I found out a lot of people had the same problem. This is a very crap printet. I will never buy lexmark again.

    • Good: Scanner works well.
    • Bad: Worst printer I have ever owned. I will try to return it to the store and buy a decent quality one.

Prints so lightly that it is worthless.

    • Good: Looks great,,,(in the box)
    • Bad: Won't recognize my USB port. Therefore it will not work. I spent 6 hours opn this junker.

I received the X-3470 as a xmas gift. BIG mistake. Allday trying to get it to work. I have now re-connected my previous one and won't complain about the replacement cartridges.
