LG 32LX2D 32-inch LCD television

By Randolph Ramsay on 10 October 2005

LG follows up its integrated plasmas with a range of new LCD televisions featuring built-in high definition digital tuners.

User rating:9

Upside
As you'll often read us mention here on CNET.com.au, high definition screens are only as good as the source you can display. And with most plasma and LCDs only shipping with analog tuners, forking out an extras few hundred dollars for a digital set top box is practically mandatory.

So hooray for LG! Not only was the Korean manufacturer one of the first to release plasma televisions with integrated digital tuners, but they've backed that up with a new range of LCDs that also feature digital capability. That means that these LG LCD sets will be able to display high definition TV signals straight out of the box.

The new LG LCD range comes in three flavours -- the 32-inch 32LX2D (AU$3999), the 37-inch 37LP1D (AU$4999) and the 42-inch 42LP1D (AU$6999). The 32-inch model sports a simple yet stylish design, with the screen being framed in black and the base of the unit decked out in silver. The set boasts some decent specs, including a 1200:1 contrast ratio, high resolution of 1366x768 pixels and a brightness of 600cd/m2. It also has a 8ms response time, meaning fast moving images should be relayed crisply and cleanly. And in another major plus, the LG LCD set features HDMI connectivity.

Downside
With built-in HD tuners and HDMI, the new range of LG LCDs is hard to fault just on their specs alone. We'll have to take them through their paces in a full CNET.com.au review before we see if there are any quirks underneath the positive exterior.

Outlook
LG's definitely going in the right direction with its new range of LCD televisions thanks to its built-in HD tuner and HDMI capability.

    poor pc connectivity

The main reason I went ahead and bought this TV was to use it with my htpc (following all the rave reviews on the 32lx2r). Not only does it not support 1360*768 resolution, when I run it at 1024*768 there are major scaling issues.

    Fantastic price

I bought mine for $2550 including 5 year extended warranty, from Good Guys Bankstown. Just as a comparison, Bing Lee was $2580 and JB Hi-Fi was $2700, both with the 5 year warranty.

Brilliant effort from LG - highly recommended

A built in tuner so no more unsightly set top box, HDMI so 1 cable only, a 1200-1 contrast ratio with fantastic picture, and whilst not technically important - a very attractive looking unit also. Purchased from Good Guys Campbelltown for $2360

    readers opinion

Just to add to my previous comments for potential buyers of the LG 32LX2D. From my experience it is hard to find this particualr model on shelves. The sales people will either say "No, there's not a 32 inch with a HD built in tuner" or they may start directing you towards other more expensive models. Why? because these LG models sell very quickly at a lower price. They dont want to show you these LG models they want you to buy the other models that are more expensive and need a HD set top box. They will try to make up negatives about the LG to sway you to buy the other more expensive models. When I bought mine only a few weeks ago. Some stores were telling me the model didnt exist and others were keeping their new LG stock out the back off the shelves. I went in and told them the model and bought one that was hiding out the back. If you do your research, you'll see I'm right. It's great to go into a store with hidden knowledge and listen to the way different sales staff work you, that's if they want to make a sale.
