LG Super Multi Blue Player BH100

By Ty Pendlebury on 01 June 2007

The LG Super Multi Blue Player (BH100) is a 'format-agnostic' player which will service both HD DVD and Blu-ray, but the question is: will people want to play both?

User rating:6

For the sake of keeping things 'nice', we're not going to mention the 'war'. Suffice to say that the clumsily named LG Super Multi Blue Player (BH100) will play pretty much any format that you wish it to.

Upside
Got boxy? The LG sure has. It's a large black and grey blob. But where it Shines -- pun intended -- is in the onboard controls. They appear to be touch capacitive in the same manner as LG's own Chocolate phone.

This is the first machine to support both HD DVD and Blu-ray, and we're licking our lips in anticipation as it supports several other features such as 24fps and 1080p. It will also support DVD, though CD support is as yet unconfirmed.

Downside
Jack of all trades, master of none? While we can't comment until we run it through the labs, there is a chance that by trying to be everything to everyone, the LG becomes nothing to anyone.

The box is very cheap and there are inevitably some compromises in building a box to a price, especially when it needs to install three different laser systems -- one for Blu-ray and HD DVD, one for DVD, and one for CD.

Outlook
We're intrigued by LG's Super Multi Blue Player (BH100), but we don't think that it will do much for the contest between the two formats at this point. The industry has tried 'format-agnostic' before in the tussle between DVD-Audio and SACD, but look how that turned out -- no-one cared. Except for audio enthusiasts, of course.

At this early stage, we think that Blu-ray is shaping up as the victor, and so in the next year or so, players like this may not need to exist. But, we're happy to be wrong about this one if the LG measures up.

    • Good: Nothing good on blu ray or LG
    • Bad: Repaire centre cannot fix the blu ray and LG call centre dont give a f...... about the customer.

I purchase a LG BD (Blue Ray DVD player) from Bing Lee on 30/06/09 (Model No BH100). After couple of days BD started with some issue. So I send the BD to repair centre (in Seven Hills NSW). Every time BD in repair centre it has more issue than it left from my home. Now I am sending for the 3rd time to repair centre with a new issue and with this time BD was in repair centre more than a month (it is in repair centre more than I used in my home).

    • Good: 2nd Blu Ray I played was "300". Never missed a beat in all the action scenes. There were absolutely no hiccups at all.
    • Bad: None really. Just need to master the remote and carry a torch to see the buttons!

Have now played some more discs on the BH100 and especially "Classical Destinations" DVD. This DVD seems to have been mastered from an original HD source and is superb. Colour saturation and gamma were excellent and definition is just short of HD (detail is less but overall effect is spectacular). The BH100 has been one of my best buys at only $1060 from a local Melbourne outlet. Yes, I know the BH200 is on its way, but so what.

Half the battle is using a good projector. My Mitsubishi HC5000 (1080P/24FPS) and 100" screen complements the BH100. All this and DALI IKON's as a surround system coupled to a YAMAHA RX-V1600 A/V amplifier make for a great home theatre experience... The black bars I mentioned in my previous comments have not resurfaced.

    • Good: Never missed a beat. Picture was super clear and stable on the Blue Ray, better than my previous (middle of the range) DVD player. Tom Cruise seems to have a pierced ear. Definition is that good. 5.1 great.
    • Bad: After playing the Blu Ray at 1080p I inserted a normal DVD. It displayed small black bars at the edges (like overscan). Next day when playing normal DVD's, effect was not there. May have been something to do with the player being still on 1080p. I noticed that the next day when a normal DVD loaded up, I could only select 1080i. Will keep an eye on what happens in future.

Brought it last saturday (22/9/07). So far played one blue ray (Mission Impossible 3) plus several standard DVD's. Very impressed with ease of connection and ease of use. Loading and fire up speed no problem. You do need to read the handbook to pick up all the finer points of setting it up correctly.

    • Bad: Pricey, region encoded.

Now all they have to do is drop the price and make it region agnostic.
