Logitech's V400 Laser Cordless Mouse for Notebooks has just about everything a road warrior could want: it offers five programmable buttons (rare for a notebook mouse), a four-way scrollwheel, a 10-metre wireless range, and a comfortable design. The AU$89.95 mouse is a bit expensive, but its similarly priced counterparts, such as the Kensington PilotMouse Laser Wireless, don't offer the programmability or the comfort of the Logitech V400.

The V400 works as a plug-and-play device, but to get all the benefits of this package, you need to install SetPoint software from the included CD. The disc lacks Mac software, instead directing you to a URL for a download. Once installed, the software makes configuring the five buttons easy; you choose which button you'd like to program and select from a list of tasks and functions. You can also configure rudimentary mouse movements, such as pointer speed and acceleration. SetPoint also allows you to monitor your mouse's battery.

Measuring 3.5 by 2.5 inches, the V400 is slightly larger than most notebook mice, but it's still very portable. We love that it has two extra buttons, both located to the left of the primary button. You don't need to move your hand to click them, but they're positioned very close together so clicking in error is a possibility. The sides are contoured for comfort, and this mouse will fit both left- and right-handed users, though the extra buttons are placed for right-handed users.

The V400, which runs off of one AA battery, comes with a USB receiver that stows away in the bottom of the mouse -- a feature we consider essential on notebook mice. In our tests, the Logitech V400 lived up to its 30-foot range, and we didn't notice any lag or cursor jumping.

The V400 is covered by a three-year limited warranty. Phone and online support are available for the life of the warranty.

    • Good: color :)

i got the one with an orange bottom and sides...the only reason why i got it was because of that. tracking was playing up when i was playing a game, that could of been from server lagg though,

    • Good: great design. fits well in your hand. small usb receiver that stores inside the mouse
    • Bad: tracking can be an issue but once you update the softwear and fine tune it you wont have any problems

i did have a bit of trouble with the tracking but afer i updated the softwear and set it up right it worked like a charm. if you can spend 15 minutes fine tuning it you shouldnt have any troubles

    • Good: programmable buttons were good, I set one as "back", another as "undo" other two as "copy" and "paste".

Hi all, got mine exchanged and tested at the spot, the replacement worked like a charm now. Several reviews from cnet.com also reported similar problem, so I guess the QC was problematic for this model.

    • Bad: All-terrain laser? need more testing

Dont judge this mouse by its looks, you will be disappointed. I have paid $53AUD from JB Hifii for this but the tracing ability of V400 was next to non-existent, especially for precision movements. I'm tempted to get a replacement tomorrow, hopefully it was a bad batch. If not, I will be getting my fair share of refund.
