Logitech X-530

By Nathaniel Wilkins, CNET.com on 25 November 2004

Although it lacks the power and the clarity of some speakers, the X-530 set provides a cheap way to add respectable 5.1-channel surround sound to your computer.

User rating:9.1
  • Good: Affordable 5.1-channel system • Desk stands double as wall mounts • 1/8-inch headphone jack
  • Bad: Lacks secondary inputs • Bass control located on subwoofer
Lightweight satellites don't stay put • Subwoofer not powerful
  • Specs: Surround sound speaker system • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$150.00
If you want to add 5.1-channel surround sound to your computer without breaking the bank, Logitech's X-530 multimedia speaker system will do the trick. Four satellite speakers, a centre-channel speaker, and a subwoofer that houses the system's amp comprise the X-530 (AU$149.95), which delivers adequate sound despite lacking the power and the clarity of more formidable 5.1-channel multimedia speaker systems.

The X-530's physical design is a mixed bag. Each of the average-looking satellite speakers has a black-plastic casing, a see-through black-cloth grille, and a built-in plastic desktop stand that swivels and conveniently converts into a wall mount. The matching, horizontally oriented centre speaker can be placed on your desk or perched atop the monitor; it tilts up or down. A power switch, a 1/8-inch headphone jack, and a system-volume control sit below the drivers on the front-right satellite speaker. Logitech put the bass control down on the subwoofer, which requires you to hit the ground to make adjustments. Another annoyance: with the lightweight satellites set up on our desktop, we easily and frequently nudged them out of position every time we accidentally tugged on their cords.

The X-530's satellites and centre speaker have dual 2-inch drivers. One produces treble and midrange frequencies, while the other produces only midrange, helping close the gap between the satellites and the subwoofer. The ported subwoofer uses one side-firing 5.25-inch driver. The X-530's 70 watts (RMS) of total system power are normal for its price point: 7.4 watts to each satellite, 15.5 watts to the centre speaker, and the remaining 25 watts to the subwoofer.

The X-530's only audio inputs are the three analog miniplugs required to connect the speakers to a 5.1-channel PC sound card. Unlike some models, the X-530 doesn't have digital inputs or a jack for connecting a music source such as an iPod.

When we fired up Unreal Tournament 2004, the X-530's performance fell short of really gripping us. Although the rear speakers enhanced our ability to detect approaching enemies, the small, loose sub failed to make explosions feel threatening. That said, the satellites and the subwoofer blended exceptionally well, especially in making music sound full. Dialogue in the Jurassic Park DVD was reasonably clear, and the soundstage had enough depth to seem convincing. For more detail and openness, we would have preferred a slightly brighter sound overall.

The X-530 represents a good value for non-power users. Hard-core gamers and others who require serious bass will be better off stepping up to a more robust model, such as Logitech's Z-5500.

    • Good: Powerful sub with amazing deep bass. Great sound quality. Cheap. Easy to set up.
    • Bad: Rear right cable a bit too short.

Overall a great product from Logitech. Well worth the buck, with great 5.1 surround sound and heavy bass from the Subwoofer.

    • Good: Quality sound, decent subwoofer, volume control on the front right speaker, nice design.
    • Bad: Have to reach all the way to the back of the subwoofer to control the bass volume. Wish it were on the front right speaker as well.

Overall, this is value for money. I wish it had the matrix feature to emulate 2.1 stuff into 5.1, but it's still very good for music and dvd experience for my relatively small room. 10/10 for what it's worth.

    • Bad: cant turn sub off completly bassy songs put to much pressure on the sub

    • Good: Good price, Decent sound, Console adaptor
    • Bad: Bass response is not the greatest, Issue with the console adaptor

I've had these about a year and a half, I absolutely love them. The subwoofer isn't the best, but it's great just for music at home. Also with the console adaptor I can only ever get sound out of one side. It might be my cable though, I'm yet to test it with a different set of cables. Overall these are great quality speakers for a great price.

    • Good: Great build quality
      Strong bass
      Well pronounced highs
      Great sound at high volumes
      Colour-coded headphne jacks
Comes with headphone -> RCA adapter for TV/XBOX etc
      Cheap
    • Bad: Speaker cables a little short but easily extended with an RCA adapter and cable
Subwoofer volume on back of sub
Front right speaker connected to sub [limits placement]
Volume on front right speaker also
Some bass-reflex port noise at higher volumes

Another great product from Logitech. If you're looking for a 5.1 solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg this is your system. Great for movies and music, nto for audiophiles.

    • Good: Low Price (Got Mine for AUS$75)
Deep Bass (If your not fussy)
Pretty good sound quality (unless you turn it up too loud it distorts)
      Works with everything

    • Bad: First lot broke:( , easily replaced under warranty
Distortion at high volumes (i'm talking 100+ decibels)
Bass is a little un-realistic at full
      Rear cables short
      Bass control on sub

Great Speakers, can be used anywhere. My mac for music my dvd for surround sound, foxtel for that extra effect for movies and sports. Makes HUGE! sound (can be heard from my neighbors two doors up!).

    • Good: Cheap 5.1 sound out of the box. Easy to setup and use. Quite reasonable sound for the price.
    • Bad: Bass control on sub. ( addressed in X-540's ) Cable lengths can be a problem for rears.

First, if you want super high quality sound then consider another product. If you are after affordable 5.1 then these will do fine. If you are having the "rattle" problem from the sub, there may be some of the assembly glue loose inside causing it. Or else the speaker itself may be vibrating against the box. Mine died after a few years and I found the cheap crimp connectors used will break contact eventually and need soldering. These connect the transformer to the amp inside the box.
