- Good: Incredible sound, nice size, mp3 player connection, not so many cables to make a mess
- Bad: minor remote issues, less minor headphone issues
First of all, you won't believe the sound that comes out of speakers so small. Logitech has rivaled Bose with the z5s. They've put tiny subwoofers on the bottom of each speaker that really to move air and, more importantly, bass. No, they aren't as good as a big woofer sitting under your desk, but they don't take up nearly as much room, either.
The tiny remote is nice. It has volume, play/pause, forward and back and power controls. In this case, Logitech considers "power off" to mean "mute", since that's all the remote's power button really does. Press it and you'll notice the audio icon in your system tray go to mute. The remote works fine in Windows Media player, however it's hit or miss in other programs. For instance, I prefer Media Monkey and you can set the remote to start MM (it has a button simply marked with a musical note that will load the music player of your choice). The play/pause and forward and back buttons, however, don't always work with MM. The first time I tried it they did, but after that it was sketchy. Sometimes they would, sometimes they would not. They always work fine in Windows Media Player.
That is strange, considering the remote just mimicks the keys you would have on a multimedia keyboard (which do still work just fine for me, I don't know what the previous reviewer's issue was with those). In fact, if you press the "mute" button on your keyboard the power light on the z5 will go off, just like pushing the power button with the remote.
The bigger issue for me is what happens to your headphone jack while using these speakers. If you have a headphone jack on the front of your computer that you like to use, simply plugging in a pair of headphones won't actually work. These speakers actually show up in windows as a separate audio system. That means, to keep using your headphone jack, you will have to go into the sound settings in Windows and change your default sound system from the USB speakers (that's what windows considers the z5s) to whatever sound card or built-in audio your computer has. You'll have to change it back when you're done. It isn't difficult, just an extra step to use your headphones that seems kind of silly.
All in all, the Logitech z5 speakers are well worth the money, especially since you can find them for $50 or so if you look around (that's what I paid at Best Buy for mine, although other places are still charging $70-$90). Even though I use headphones and Media Monkey quite often, the issues there aren't deal breakers when you consider the sheer quality of sound coming out of such little speakers. It also doesn't hurt to get rid of all of those speaker wires that looked like a real rat's nest under my desk with my old speakers and their huge subwoofer. -

- Good: nice sound and size
- Bad: volume control
These speakers sound nice, are an ideal size, and have only a USB connection however the only way to control the volume is to open the volume menu from the task bar and slide the control to the appropraite volume. This sucks. Keyboard volume controls don't work either.
