Maxtor OneTouch II (300GB)

By Brian Nadel, CNET.com on 19 November 2004

Maxtor's OneTouch II external hard drive makes a good thing even better, with 250GB to 300GB's worth of one-button backups, but be warned: it eliminates any excuses for not backing up a computer.

    No problems at all

I have had the maxtor OneTouch II (300GB) for 5 months now. It has never failed me once. It takes between 5 and 10 seconds to load up and run and is quick to open files and folders on the drive.
I have the software installed so that i can backup all files on the computer in case of problems. But i prefer to just store music, movies, documents and pictures by manually loading them onto the drive myself.
After losing hundreds of songs and documents in the past due to viruses and crashes, the Maxtor drive offers peace of mind.
    Definately worth the money

    Works Great

Bout the Maxtor II and a Simpleteck at the same time for offline storage. I'm very happy with the Maxtor, can't wait to throw the Simpletech out the window. The Maxtor plays MP3'S fine. However, its a great drive for storage and backups. They do need to get better software!

    NO GOOD FOR MP3'S

    TRANSFERS FILES OK BUT AFTER
YOU TRY TO OPEN THEM THE DRIVE FREZZES UP. YOUR CPU CAN'T DETECT THE DRIVE AND ALL YOU DATA IS GONE. TRYED 3 OF THE SAME HD'S ON 3 DIFERENT PC'S AND THE SAME THING HAPPENS TO ALL OF THE HD'S!!!

Hardware is OK, Software is not

The Retrospect Express HD software that comes with this drive is very buggy. Before you install it check out the Danz user forum - lots of unhappy people there.

Great for backing up a crowded computer

actually, drive seems to work fine on linux

Although its not officially supported, the drive seems to work fine on modern Linux distributions (it usually appears as /dev/sda).

The only caveat is that, by default, the drive spins down after about 1 hour. However, this can be fixed using the maxtor utility (if you have a windows box around to run it).

    Great product

I might not be with the crowd here but I think this product is great, if the main downfall is that it's heavy then thats fantastic.

    storage yes, mp3's no

If you are storing mp3's or video it is much cheaper to buy a hard drive and a case than something like this
