Mercedes-Benz dealerships down under have yet to put the C-Class coupe on sale, but already a M3-chasing variant has been unveiled at the F1 race in Nurburgring, Germany.

In brief

Under the C63 AMG Black Series' vented bonnet hides a 6.2-litre V8 with 380kW of power and 620Nm of torque. Sending all its power to the rear wheels, the Black Series is capable of sprinting from zero to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds. The driver is freed from having to shift gears or operate a clutch pedal as the standard transmission is a seven-speed automatic, dubbed AMG Speedshift MCT. Doing without a regular automatic transmission's torque converter, the AMG Speedshift MCT can shift gears in just 100ms in either Manual or Sport Plus modes.

Standard equipment on the Black Series includes five airbags, AMG sports bucket seats, cruise control and speed limiter, automatic headlights and climate control air conditioning. An eight-speaker Audio 20 sound system with Bluetooth, CD and USB can, judging by the images supplied, be replaced by a sat nav-equipped Comand system.

In its default configuration the C63 AMG Black Series comes with seating for just two — the rationale being that doing without rear seats saves weight and increases performance. The car can be optioned up to a four seater with grippy bucket seats for every passenger.

If the standard Black Series isn't full-on enough for you, AMG Track and Aerodynamics packages are also available. The former adds an extra radiator to cool the rear axle transmission and even grippier specially developed Dunlop tyres, while the latter sees the car fitted with a carbon fibre front splitter and an adjustable rear aerofoil blade.

Outlook

Local pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
