Microsoft Arc Mouse

Microsoft's Arc is one of the best mouse concepts we've seen, combining the benefits of portability and a full-sized mouse into the one unit.

Craig was sucked into the endless vortex of tech at an early age, only to be spat back out babbling things like "phase-locked-loop crystal oscillators!". Mostly this receives a pat on the head from the listener, followed closely by a question about what laptop they should buy.

You'd be forgiven for thinking Microsoft's Arc was the latest exercise in design wankery, as we certainly did when images first started filtering down. Thankfully however, this is completely untrue. The Arc is a case of form following function, and not the other way around — as the space under the mouse serves as an area for the rear end of the mouse to fold under, cutting down the size dramatically when it comes to storage.

This effectively gives the user a notebook-sized mouse when they want to pack it away, but a full-sized mouse when they're using it, avoiding "the claw" that so many notebook users have to employ to use the tiny mice. The hinge is strong too, and so won't break in a hurry.

While the wireless receiver is small, it's not quite the size of Logitech's tiny receivers, and we wouldn't feel safe leaving it plugged into the laptop while travelling. Thankfully, it handily locks to the underside of the mouse magnetically when you want to stow it away, meaning it's quite hard to lose. The mouse takes two AA batteries to power, but is still a comfortable weight.

Aside from the usual two buttons and middle button/scroll wheel, there's a thumb button on the left-hand side — other than this the mouse is symmetrical, making it mostly suitable for left and right handers.

Available in black and red in December, at AU$99.95 it's a steal, and should be one of the top notebook mice on your purchase list.

The Good:Comparable to a desktop mouse

The Bad:Nothing (Seriously)

I used to demo high-end graphics software for a living, flying all over Asia. I searched long and hard for the perfect travel mouse, trying the best from Logitech, Kensington and others but nothing comes close to the Arc Mouse for comfort, precision, battery life or sheer style. I recently bought a second one to replace a stupid Magic Mouse on my MacPro at work, which was causing hand cramps after a few hours use. I can see myself continuing to use the Arc Mouse for many, many years.

The Good:awsome design, great portability, comes with case

The Bad:the 4th button is in a very awkward spot

I do graphics work on my computer and my mouse needs to be perfect, which this one is with no doubt.

The Good:*My hand does not cramp after long periods of time on design work.
*Its portability is fantastic, folds right up in to a small case that comes with the mouse

The Bad:*For some reason it wouldn't scroll in itunes, and with a large music library this became annoying, but once i downloaded the intelipoint software it was fine.

I'm an architectural technician, and my mouse is my most important tool, and the arc mouse meets all my needs in a neat little package.
