There are so many companies producing portable GPS devices that it has become rather difficult to pick one that's right for you. Fortunately, there are products like the Mitac Mio C510 that cover most bases, offering an array of functionality including mobile phone hands free, audio playback and a contacts manager in addition to its basic navigation.

Design
The Mio C510 strikes us as a rather mundane looking portable GPS device. Our test unit came in a matt grey colour with black borders and a bright 3.5-inch screen. At the top of the unit you'll find the memory card reader and external antenna port, as well as a small bulge housing the GPS receiver. Other external features include a headphone jack and USB port, plus several buttons to control the unit's main functions such as power and volume.

One design feature we liked was the rubbery buttons, which were very tactile and easy to use. Mounting the C510 requires a two piece connector with a suction cap that attaches to your car's windscreen plus the actual mount that attaches to the device. Securing the mount was a simple affair and the strength of the suction cap was good, though removing it can be difficult. The C510 is very small at just 110mm by 76mm by 20.6mm with weight an equally low 170 grams. Despite its small size, the C510 still includes a 320 x 240 resolution touch sensitive screen with 65,000 colours.

Included in the box is a separate AC charger, a rarity among portable GPS devices, which plugs into a mini-USB connector. This means that you can charge up the C510 either by using the AC charger or plugging it into your PC's USB port. Mitac also provides an in car charger that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter.

Features
Powering the C510 is a 400MHz processor running the Windows CE 4.2 operating system. GPS duties are taken care of thanks to the newer SiRFstar III GPS receiver and the fully embedded antenna. The SiRFstar III GPS receiver is well known for its ability to work in dense urban areas without a direct line of sight.

Onboard there's only 512MB to hold all the mapping data as well as any of your personal files, although this can be upgraded with a memory card. The maps can either be displayed in 2D or 3D, with directions read in a choice of 15 different languages. In addition to the devices standard navigating features is the ability for it to act as a mobile phone's hands free with built-in Bluetooth, as well as a MP3 player and picture viewer. Calls can be made directly via your Outlook contacts, which can be transferred from a PC.

Performance
After charging, which took about three hours through the USB cable, we were ready to starting testing the navigation features. After turning on the device, we had to enter our language preference as well as date and time info. Acquiring a satellite was quick at just 30 seconds, and mounting the unit to the windscreen was straight forward. The grip of the mount is strong, which allowed us to manoeuvre the unit until we were happy with the position. The C510 picks up the latest MioMap 3 navigation software and includes handy information in the extensive points of interest (POI) list.

Entering your destination via the onscreen QWERTY keyboard is quick and can be done using your fingers instead of the stylus. Once data is inputted, the route calculation takes less then 10 seconds, which was very impressive. Recalculation for a missed turn was incredibly quick, taking just seconds in most cases. The maps of the C510 were some of the best we've seen for a portable GPS and the zooming function made the experience even better. The bright screen was still viewable even in direct sunlight while voices were audible and pleasant. Overall the C510 performed exceptionally well, although we would like to see it priced a little more competitively.

Nice and reliable item, with nice features.

    • Good: Bluetooth, choices of voices, favorites places features.
    • Bad: Continiously reseting, need to change the power source angle. Need updates for San Diego CA. and Tijuana México.

Awful, buy anything else. This unit has been so unreliable I would never buy anything Mio again.
Crashed during journey, blacked screened, needed reset.
Sent back to Mio, at my expense 3 times received re-conditioned unit after second failure.
    Waste of money

    • Good: Looks

Great direction finding, clear instructions, easily demountable.

    • Good: fast route recalculations, clear large display, changes automatically from "smart 3D" to overview display of maps
    • Bad: short battery life, no map upgrade information, POI outdated by approx. 8 years. Where are the listed "name-of street announcements"?

This is my third GPS and for useability this is the dogs whatsits.
The bluetooth hands free is brilliant
The display is very nice and the variable birdseye view, a nice touch.

    • Good: Good volume
      excellent phone handsfree through bluetooth.
      nicely presented maps
    • Bad: Maps are quite outdated
The power/interface connector would be better if it were right angled
Often will not start up and needs a hard reset to boot which requires you to reconnect your phone otherwise the mio doestn't see the phone.

This was my first GPS unit and probably a good choice for an entry-level with bluetooth.

I never really use the bluetooth anymore because it's just too clumsy and I now have a bluetooth wireless earpiece.

Also the pictures and MP3 features are gimmicks which I never use and could do without.

It's a great little unit. The biggest downside is its low battery life. I find myself having it plugged into the car charger most of the time, so it might as well not have a battery.

There's a few inaccuracies in the maps and I'd love to get a map update but I can't find any info on how to do this.

The mio aus website is hard to navigate and lacks useful information.

    • Good: * great unit for the price
    • Bad: * needs a bigger screen
      * battery runs down too quickly
      * aussie voice is not aussie
      * the bluetooth indicator light is distracting and way too bright at night time
      * mio aus website is full of bad/missing links and unhelpful info
      * maps out of date with no information about when or how to update them
      * various inaccuracies in mapping - particularly with roads/streets in country areas
      * the menus and functions seem all over the place and follow no logic

Excellent system. Search options are comprehensive once you know how to operate the system. For example, to search for a specified street in all suburbs in the Perth metro area, search for the street name using "Perth" and not "Perth CBD" as the suburb. All streets with the specified name along with the suburb name will be listed for the Perth metro area. Select the desired option from the list. This is a really handy feature as some people quote the wrong suburb name for the specified street. If you are sure of the suburb just enter the suburb name.

Complaints have been made about the volume, maybe slightly soft for telephone calls (made via bluetooth) but I have never turn the volume above 70 - 80% for voice navigation instructions. :-)

Clearly a lot of development has gone into this product and I am really impressed with what Mio has produced.

    • Good: -Great maps
      -Clear instructions
-240V to USB power adaptor supplied
      -Bluetooth for Mobile phone
      -Navigate to ""coordinate feature
      -Comprehensive Point of Interest list
-FREE upgrade to V14 maps to end of July 2007 (Australia)
      - super quick route recalculation times
      - external volume control
      - 400MHz processor compared to some other brands that use a 266MHz processor.
      - advertised 4 to 5 hour battery life.
    • Bad: - Cannot use the MP3 player and map at the same time, its one or the other. (Not something I would want to do anyway.)
      - Some software features are not obvious and you need to allow some time to learn the fine detail of how the system works.
-Windscreen mount tends to hang on when you try to release it. This is a minor point and frankly I am happy it does this, as it gives me confidence it will not fall off the windscreen.
