mobiBLU Cube2

By Ella Morton on 22 September 2006

It's cute and will no doubt provoke a lot of "Ooh, what's that?" responses from friends, but the Cube2 is not a player you'd want to use frequently.

  • Bad: Buttons too small • Screen too small • Awkward lanyard-style headphones

A day is a long time in the world of portable audio. Less than 24 hours after we received the mobiBLU Cube2 press release, which boasted it was the "world's smallest MP3 player", Apple's Steve Jobs unveiled the second-generation iPod Shuffle, which has even tinier dimensions, and looks hotter to boot. Ouch.

So the Cube2's "world's smallest" gimmick has been cruelly snatched away (the Shuffle is wider and taller, but flat, and therefore wins in terms of volume -- we calculated!); that shouldn't matter as long as it has plenty of features, a solid design, and an intuitive interface, right? Right? Oh dear.

Design
The world's second-smallest MP3 player is, befitting its name, cube-shaped, with each side measuring 25.4mm. A tiny 65k-colour OLED display graces one side, with the right adjoining side featuring circular buttons for track navigation and volume adjustment, and the left adjoining side housing the lock and menu buttons. The top side has a headphone port, which, unusually, also serves as a socket for USB connection.

The Cube2 dangles from a set of lanyard-style headphones, which would be fine if said headphones looked good and sat well. However, the design is both impractical and unattractive, with two big silver beads and dual plastic toggles making for an unnecessarily cluttered look. The lanyard style also means that the player can't be placed in a pants pocket unless you use another set of headphones -- you're stuck wearing the Cube2 around your neck like a gaudy trinket. Not good news if you want an MP3 player you can exercise with; the constant bouncing of the cube's edges against your sternum would be a major irritation. We'd ditch the daggy lanyard contraption in favour of basic earbuds.

Features
A feature that surprised and perplexed us was the ability to view images and video files on the miniscule display. If you thought it was impractical to watch a blockbuster movie on an iPod, you will surely find the notion of squinting at videos on a 13 x 13mm screen pretty ridiculous.

If miniaturised multimedia appeals to you and you're keen on transferring pics and videos to the player, you will need to convert the files to MSJ (for images) or MSV (for video) format. The included software offers a basic, intuitive interface for doing this, and the compressed files are easily dragged to the player, which appears as an external drive on your PC.

Other features include a surprisingly clear FM radio, voice and radio recording and the ability to alter playback speed of files.

Performance
Much of the frustration we felt when using the Cube2 could be traced to one source -- the size of the display. Due to the lack of OLED real estate, menu titles and file names cannot be displayed in full statically, but scroll across the screen when highlighted. While you can adjust the scrolling speed, menu navigation is still a necessarily slow experience, and the tiny buttons don't help matters. You may need to grow your fingernails in order to browse your music collection on the Cube2.

The fact that the buttons perform multiple functions according to how long they are pressed for was also problematic. This was particularly apparent when we went to make a voice recording and discovered that the Record button is also the Hold key. We ended up with a recording of buttons being pushed repeatedly and several swear words being uttered.

For what is essentially a novelty music player, the sound quality of the Cube2 was quite good. Songs did become a little muffled at higher volumes, but things improved when we tweaked the sliders on the custom equaliser.

Battery life was acceptable at around 8 hours, and adjusting the LCD brightness and backlight timer makes the juice last a little longer.

Having lost its biggest selling point in the wake of the much more publicised 2G Shuffle, the Cube2 struggles to be appealing. It's a cute, diverting little tech toy you can clip on a keychain and impress people with, but its many extras just don't perform that well. And we still don't believe that there's anyone out there with a desperate need to watch video content on a fingernail-sized screen.

Very unique, and the "Ohh what's that?" statement comes into everyday life often. It's cute and it's small. The screen is annoying, so I avoid it as much as possible. I didn't realise it was so expensive until i saw the price the other day.

    • Good: The size is great, teachers don't notice it, and the compliments are in everyday life. Auto Artist sorting is a great invention, plus with the genre, album and artist sorting it truly does make life a lot simpler.
    • Bad: The small screen is unbarable. Although the size is fine with me, somedays it's just too small. I loose it easily although it's constantly in my pocket. The landyard head phones break easily, (which clearly have for me) so I use other not as expensive headphones.

Its really a small, tiny and handy mp3 player. I am amazed when first time i heard its sound its sound quality is best. I like it.

    • Good: Zippy performance.
    • Bad: Nothing.

I got this cube about a week ago, and it took me about 5 minutes to learn how to use it all. Fairly easy if you read the manual. I've never really had another mp3 player, but I've seen my friends' iPods or whatever they had, and this one is far better. I love it!

The buttons aren't too small for me & the screen is just fine. That is, after all, the whole point of the cube. To be small.

The headphones are a bit strange, but they tried. Just use any other headphone you want if you don't like them :)

It's true that it'll definitely catch people's attention. I just hope everyone doesn't get one! It's kinda cool seeing everyone with their iPods, and me, with this awesome piece of technology.

    10/10!

    • Good: Pretty much everything.
    • Bad: Nothing :)

I have the DAH-1500i (AKA : the older cube) I'm very happy with this particular brand, because it keeps people occupied during classes or wherever. I know the screen may seem small, but as the days go along, you tend to get used to it. I saw the Cube2 just the other day, and I demanded it. It's in the mail this moment, and it's coming along the way. The landyard isn't the best thing to have for the Cube2 as it is extremely hard to look at the screen. (I have JVC headphones, and they work like a charm)

    • Good: EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE, this I can promise you. It's most definatally a (Oooh, What's that? Is that an mp3 player?!) kind of a gesture.
    • Bad: Yes, the button and the screen is small, but you grow into the fact that it's small, and you just adjust. Don't worry, it's always a good thing to have MobiBLU around. Really easy to put songs on this mp3 player, because it acts as a removable hardware (basically, you can put anything on here!) *SCORE*

    Review video...??!!! wtf

I thought the cute little cube2 deserved my attention so I curiously clicked on the video review. Much to my astonishment, the reviewer (Ella Morton) seemed more interested in displaying her ridiculously inept comedic abilities rather than provide a succint and eloquent review (as one would expect). If cnet australia continues to hire reviewers such as Ms Morton, who shows no effort to at even use some technical words to mask her naievity of 'technology', I'm better off going back to the *real* cnet (.com)

Honestly, hire some nerds to do the job properly!

    Im sold on the cube2!

I purchased the earlier cube a year ago and still enjoy it very much.

I am going to jump to the cube2 for that exact reason. I trust their products and they have made some simple improvements on an already great product. the outer casing looks better (especially with the loop on the top for attaching the earphones being better hidden, less breakable i think. and the video playback sounds awesome. am i going to be watching movies and video on it? probably not. obviously its a gimick with not much practical value, but hey, a nice mp3 player with a little video playback on the side. why not?

worth checking into if you are in the market for a 1 or 2 gig player.

    Better Than i-Pod Shuffle

    • Good: If the reference is about the volume, i- Pod Shuffle wins. But if the reference is about a fully featured mp3 player then there is no doubt that mobiblu wins. Why go for an i- Pod shuffle if you can go for the cube 2 that gives you all the features an mp3 player. You enjoy and get your money's worth.
    • Bad: Absolutely none at the moment. It doesn't mean that i- Pod pioneered the mp3 player doesn't mean that they are still the best. I'm just trying to be fair in terms of other brands where the mp3 quality has gone beyond what i- Pod can offer.
