iPhone

Will we see a 3G iPhone in time for the Australian release?

We heard it from Apple CEO Steve Jobs already, but now US network AT&T also is saying that the carrier will offer a 3G iPhone.

According to Bloomberg News, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said yesterday that a 3G version of Apple's mobile phone will be available in 2008. Stephenson didn't elaborate on exactly when we'd see it -- though Jobs had said late in 2008 -- nor did he say exactly what features it would offer.

And as for a price (currently the iPhone retails for AU$635), Stephenson said that would be up to Jobs to dictate.

Many reviewers have criticised the iPhone's lack of 3G support, particularly since AT&T has a robust 3G network. But Jobs has defended the omission by saying that the 3G chip sets take up too much space, and thus would make the iPhone larger, and that 3G use would eat up excessive battery life.

Stephenson didn't say whether those problems have been solved, but personally, we'd be willing to accept a fatter iPhone for the chance to browse the wireless Web at 3G speeds. And yes, we say, even with the integrated Wi-Fi.

Sez you! The improvement in speed from EDGE to 3G would be nice, but at the cost of a fatter phone, possibly with shorter battery life? No, personally i don't think so. If I need to use the web between the wifi of my home and office, I'd gladly be throttled to EDGE speed if it meant a slimmer device.

when are we actually going to get the iPhone? I mean Australia is lagging behind all the other major countries... it's actually kind of turning me off buying the damn phone!

It would be great if we heard any news of when the iPhone might hit Australia! I'm hanging out for one big time. Although I would prefer it had 3G HSPDA and Full Push Exchange Support. That would be the ultimate device.

Compared to the headphones bundled with Apple's iPhone 3G the MM 50s are light years ahead. Exceptional sounding bass and its affordable price tag make the MM 50 a great choice for replacing those dodgy Apple ear buds.
