The great mobile catch-22: we want screens large enough to read comfortably, but we also want phones small enough to fit in our pockets. It's a real conundrum, right?
Big screens rolled into small packages
Not for Dutch manufacturers Polymer Vision who are currently developing the first mobile phone to incorporate a "roll-out" 13cm display -- which is about the size of two business cards sitting side-by-side. Dubbed the "cellular book", the device is to be announced next week at the annual 3GSM conference in Barcelona.
Information on the Polymer Vision Web site suggests the screens can be rolled to the thickness of a finger, and when in use do not consume any power to maintain an image. Plus, apparently, they're unbreakable.
The screens, however, do not display colour, instead displaying 16 levels of grey. So the main function, for now, will be for "e-reading"; as in, reading mobile news sites and RSS feeds.
The "cellular book" is to be released in mid-2008 with 3G network compatibility and a whopping 4GB of internal memory, with the ability to play music and podcasts.
