update Optus will sell Apple's 8GB 3G iPhone for the outright price of AU$729 and AU$849 for the 16GB model, when purchased with Optus prepaid SIM cards.

The iPhone will also be available post-paid on the Optus network for $0 upfront for the 16GB iPhone 3G on an AU$79 capped plan over 24 months, with an included monthly data allowance of 700MB. A range of 12- and 24-month plans will also be available, with cheaper monthly caps attracting additional handset charges.

The cheapest option involves an AU$19 minimum monthly spend and handset repayments of AU$21 per month for the 8GB model. This plan includes AU$50 of calls and messages and a 100MB data allowance.

New and existing Optus prepaid customers will receive bonus mobile data allowances when recharging their prepaid plans, and customers purchasing an iPhone will receive a start-up bonus of AU$400 credit. All iPhone customers will receive free unlimited data usage for the first month when the iPhone is purchased before 31 August.

All iPhones purchased with a prepaid SIM will be network locked to Optus with an unlocking fee of AU$80 if applied for in the first six months after the original date of activation, or after AU$80 of prepaid credit has been purchased.

But i thought Mr. Jobs said it was going to be $199???...he lied! :) Only kidding! ...to all those who got their currency converters out and said it was going to be $229....Ha-haa! ...and those who complain about "only 1GB", that's HUGE for a mobile phone. It's not going to replace your home ADSL so you can download movies. It's for checking email and websites. Remember (as of today) Telstra charge $2 for 1MB. Happy lining up next Friday, and here come the "I missed out, sold out, Apple sux" threads.

Yeah, $199 for an 8GB iPhone on a 24 month AT&T contract. Many people failed to read that part and thought they were going to get a bargain iPhone.....Poor, misguided fools. Somehow I couldn't have seen Apple suddenly dropping the prices of it's iTouchs to $250-400 dollars to match the prices of the 'cheaper' iPhone.

Re: "The iPhone will also be available post-paid on the Optus network for $0 upfront for the 16GB iPhone 3G on an AU$79 capped plan over 24 months, with an included monthly data allowance of 700MB" Please note that the 16GB model will only be available for free on the $89 Cap - the $79 cap incurs a $2 per month handset fee over 24 months

If it sounds too good to be true ..... Seriously a $199 iPhone? That is cheaper than an iPod. Even at the real price demand will outstrip supply - why would Apple give them away for $199?

If you look at the optus page regarding pricing http://www.optusiphone.com.au/getdoc/3727f208-955d-4c4a-ad38-b860c9b14e56/post-paid-pricing.aspx The prices arent actually that bad. iPhone is available on cap plans from $19 and yes plans from the same, with monthly repayments added to the plan price. This is just the same as every other phone on the market. It's not unusual for a new phone to be free on a 79 cap, rather than a 49 for example. I am quite pleased with optus' pricing, more so than telstra anyway.

optus = rippoff. the carriers here suck with their pricing. telstra & optus give companies who have a dozen handsets rates as low as 15c a min to wherever plus cash bonus to sign on for 24 months. then they rip the crap off consumers with pathetic iphone pricing. good grief I hope someone is scammer these mothers!

this is bullsh*t "making the iPhone 3G affordable for everyone" pretty sure everyone can't afford to fork out $750+ and still be locked in the prepaid and for a simple $49 cap, you have to pay that PLUS extra monthly repayments the iphone isn't that good when u think about it, no mms, no video recorder, only 2mp camera. the touch screen is the major draw point you can find those features on most $300 phones the hype over the iphone is its major selling point. i hope vodafone releases some decent plans for it otherwise i'll be saving for a good sony ericsson

i think the optus pricing is great! im a student and the optus plans seem to be great value for money! for $59 a month i can get $350 worth of calls plus 500mb and sign up to a 12 month contract which ends up cheaper than a 24 month one! this plan is much cheaper than any other phone that ive bought before and only do half as much! these prices dont seem anymore exorbitant than any other phone contract!

If you guys are protecting Jobs, just go youtube and type "iPhone 199", i am pretty sure that he was referring the price tag "iPhone will be $199" all over the world. Who should we blame? Apple or Optus? Think about it.

no one has commented on the fact that with optus even on a contract the iphone will still cost about $600, according to optus website you can pay for your iphone using monthly payments on the $19 cap plan on a 1 year contract payments are $51 a month ($612) over one year, this is in contrast to telstra which on a $30 dollar plan cost only $279 so for $10 extra month ($120 over a year) you get the same iphone for $333 cheaper, does anyone know if you can pay for the iphone at time of purchase on a contract with optus, will it be cheaper this way. if not i will be going with telstra or vodafone.

So far all of the plans are overly expensive. The cheapest Optus option will cost $960 over 24 months and the cheapest option on Telstra costs a whopping $999! Although it is Telstra and it does cost more i prefer it because the telstra deal comes with free unlimited access to their massive wireless hotspot access (all over the city and in every maccas and starbucks). Now the saving begins :(. Please someone give me a better deal!!!!!

i would like to get an iphone, but there pricey! it was only about $300 to make the phone & their charging this much, but there's a 4GB but it's a few hundreds cheaper. The plans are just nasty payments, your better of paying it outright! For sure i'll be paying outright. In the long end, you won't be able to keep up with the payments, if you get a plan. If you can't afford it outright. I think optus would be best to go with, cheapest i've seen & better prepaid-plans.
