Online travel communications retailer Telestial recently launched its Travel Journal feature, an online service that automatically creates an online trip journal based on the location of the user's phone.

Using a special SIM card that triangulates the user's location using mobile phone towers, Travel Journal automatically updates in more than 100 countries. Trip data is displayed on a Google map and a journal is created with images of locations visited by the traveler (photo upload is said to be "coming soon"), local weather, and a record of recent communications. Users can manually update their journal by sending text messages or photos to the Travel Journal site.

As the journal is created, family and friends can view and make comments about journal posts online. Privacy settings ("private", "family and friends" and "public") give travelers control over who can access their journal. Viewers of the journal can also see if the journaling phone is on, send text messages, and recharge minutes using a credit card.

This service could be especially fun for people planning road trips or international travel. If the system works as advertised, it will allow users to enjoy their travel, instead on focusing on chronicling it.

Travel Journal is free and is included with the purchase of all Telestial international phone packages or SIM cards.

The Zinc II looks great on paper with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. However, poor design mar the experience, with input being tremendously frustrating.

A BlackBerry without a keyboard may seem like a car without wheels, but if RIM has given us a touchscreen similar to the stunning display we saw on the Bold, then the Storm could be this year's must-have touch-sensitive smartphone.

The Touch Pro is a step in the right direction for HTC. It's still a bit sluggish but overall it performs better than the Diamond, plus the keyboard is a winning touch.

Of the three new smartphones announced by HTC, the Touch 3G looks destined to suffer middle child syndrome. Its spec sheet falls short of the mouth-watering Touch HD, and its price won't be as attractive as the low-end Viva.

Without a doubt, two of the most highly anticipated and sought after smartphones of 2008 are Apple's iPhone 3G and HTC's Touch Diamond. Have you ever wondered what might happen if you spliced the two together?
