GPS navigation on mobile phones

Question

I have wanted to buy a GPS satellite device for my car and I also want a PDA and a new mobile phone. Is there a device available or coming out soon that combines all of these?

Hi Barry,

This is a very timely question as only a week ago a device was announced that fits perfectly: the HP iPAQ hw6515 Mobile Messenger.

It has GPS navigation, Bluetooth, infrared and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE for voice and data. There is a built-in QWERTY keyboard similar to the Treo 650's for thumb-typing messages and it comes with handheld versions of Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player 10. The only notable omission from the hw6515's list of connectivity options is wireless LAN.

For a RRP of AU$1199, you get Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system, a touch sensitive 65K colour 3-inch TFT display, 1.3-megapixel camera, SD and MiniSD card slots, 64MB of RAM, and up to 56MB of user accessible memory.

In Australia, users also get one-month free subscription to Whereis Navigator.

We are expecting a review unit any day now so check back soon for our full review.

I have a HP6515F which does have a built in GPS. The unit is sound and can be used when vehicle mounted. In fact, a charger with craddle are essential as the GPS does chew through the power when using as a hand held unit. The antenna is built in. It does come with software installed but i haven't used it since checking it out. I have utilised "Oziexplorer CE" and downloaded all my RASTER maps from my laptop (which also uses "Oziexplorer"). It then becomes a colour GPS with tracking etc. In fact it has many of the functions a GARMIN 76C has. You have the added bonus of using upto a 2GB memory card to load all of australia onto the GPS, or use it as a MP3 player. Worth a look if you need both a PDA/Phone/GPS. Price is dropping as I have seen it for $879 from 01SEP06 (and that is in Darwin which is always expensive) Hope this helps

A cheaper option would be the Nokia E61 which is GPS capable if you don't mind purchasing (or already have access to) a bluetooth enabled GPS receiver.

Guys, dont you think Mio A712 fits the bill wonderfully? seems GR8, on the face of it, esp with Wifi, 3.2 MP Cam, GPS and a big 2.7" screen. Best of all, around $380!!!
