We still can't get our heads around why LG chose "Chocolate" as the pet name for its KG800 mobile phone -- is it because it's desirable, comes in chocolate box-shapped packaging or has smooth, touch-sensitive navigation?
LG chose a trendy bar on the Sydney Harbour Foreshore for the Australian launch of its Chocolate phone last night. Local celebs called in for the gig included radio personality Jackie O, the two Australian models used in the worldwide Chocolate phone television advertising campaign and a handful of Home & Away stars.
After journalists sat down and the realisation set in that they were in fact at a phone launch and shouldn't expect Willy Wonka to suddenly appear handing out treats, LG's Australian marketing manager Carli Wilson introduced the Chocolate, which is also know by its less memorable model number KG800. She explained that Chocolate is just the pet name of its upcoming Black Label Series of mobile phones, which will focus on style and minimalism through innovative designs.
Decked out in a glossy piano-black case, the Chocolate slider phone certainly oozes sophistication, with its most notable feature being touch-sensitive controls that glow red when the screen is slid open. But while we instantly fell in love with LG's radical design concept, we soon found out that not everyone will be fond of what the Chocolate has to offer.
There is 128MB of internal memory onboard but no expansion card slot, which limits the number of photos and music that can be stored on the phone. And while the design of the KG800 is cutting edge, the resolution of the camera is not; a mere 1.3-megapixels compared with Sony Ericsson and Sharp having released 3-megapixel camera phones, the K800i and the 903, respectively.
But this isn't a mobile designed for tech geeks. Instead, it's LG's first serious foray into the fashion phone arena which Motorola has been excelling in with its iconic Razr series of phones. Although Motorola has since released its stylish SLVR (pronounced "sliver"), we think the Chocolate is more eye-catching and will be a serious competitor in this sought-after space.
Over 300,000 of the Chocolate phones were sold within the first three months following the November 2005 launch of the handset in Korea, according to LG. It is available now through Telstra, Optus and Vodafone for a recommended retail price of AU$799.
In our few hours playing with the Chocolate, we're still not used to the touch-sensitive controls. After using mobile phones that provide a tactile button push for so long now, it's probably going to take a couple of day to familiarise ourselves with the new design before we're comfortable. That said, first time iPod users can also find it strange to navigate through menus and lists with touch sensitive scroll-wheel, but it's arguably the most efficient way once you're used to it. It will also be interesting to see how long the Chocolate's battery will last -- in less than 24 hours, we've noticed the KG800 drop from four bars of power to just one. We'll have to wait until fully power cycling the handset before giving our verdict.

I've only had this phone for one day... Haha, but already the touch-sensitive keypad seems to be losing its sensitivity. I'm afraid if I press too hard I'll break it though. Well personally I regret buying this phone. I have had nothing bu trouble with it and just want to through it away. It is not user friendly, isn't practicle, and is no where near as advance in technology as motorola or nokia. The camera forever freezes and now I can't take any photos at all... Personally, it is one of my worst purchases! Don't make the same mistake I did...

I've had this phone for 5 months. After 2 weeks I started having problems. When I answered the phone I couldnt hear people, when I rang I couldn't hear anything, not even the ringing. It freezes, it turns itself off, the touchpad works on its own. Sometimes it wont even let me make calls, i never have reception, i cant send or receive messages... the list goes on. My old phone has been dropped, thrown, peed on (by pets), dunked in water and is 3 years old, and it still works. This piece of crap, Chocolate, couldn't even last 2 weeks, and it wasn't dropped or anything. I just want my money back but LG insists on repairing the damn thing. I say they should just give up on the chocolate and make something that works.

My daughter purchased one of these phones, shortly after she was told by other owners that it would soon fail - screen will go white, 1 month later it happened. We currently have it in for repair. The Telstra shop sent it to someone, then that "someone" gets parts from LG - LG have no parts, we have waited 1 month so far and are told to expect another 2 weeks. If these phones are faulty LG should not be selling them, according to the Trade Practices Act if a company is selling a faulty product you must be told it has a problem at point of sale, this way you can choose if you want the trouble or not. We purchased the phone from a reputable company we did not think we would be buying a problem

i have a beautiful pink one. iv had it a month and love it heaps, although its starting to screw up. it turns itself off all the time which is really annoying when im halfway thru a really long txt msg. which is really gay coz i really like the look of the phone. battery also runs out pretty fast. also i accidently call people all the time, as even though the screen is on lock, if you touch the touchpad th command you push will work anyway. so gayy coz its such a hot phone.

Have the Chocolate for over a year now (kinda stuck with it for 2 years), but regret it it every day. Biggest problem is network. It's always searching for the network!!!! I cant use the damn thing in my own house! Sometimes it doesnt ring when receiving a call, or message. There's nothing wrong with the network, my previous phones always had excellent connection (same network). Took it back to the shop, they sent it back to LG (8 weeks!!) all they did was reset the phone with no result at all. Taking pictures is another drag. The battery-indicator is very unreliable too, drops from 4 bars to 2, than back to 3, and then you find your phone switched off at the end of the day bc battery too low. Nice. + Ive had phones with way better txtmssging features. So: WASTE OF MONEY and bad influence on mental health. DONT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP

it is a good phone. Many people dont like the touch pad but if you can use a ipod well you will be fine with it. It has a fair amount of memory, if you need more than it has go buy a ipod you cheap-o. I have had mione for about a month now and the touchpad has not lost any of it sensitivty. If your going for a fancy looking phone that not every-second person has i would really recommed this one. I have also found one of the best feautres of the phone just recently, if you add someone to your bluetooth list you can go through their phone and copy whatever you want from it. I hope i have been a help and if you have anymore ?'s ill try to answear them for you. (i got a black one)

Wow, there is so many contradicting comments here, I'm actually looking for a new phone that has all the good features of a more expensive phone and honestly, this looks and sounds like a really good phone, I love the sleek design and the touch sensitive pad, but all these bad reviews and complaints from people buying it and it not working is a real turn off, although despite what has been said I think I'll still go ahead and purchase it from Big W on special for $200(AUS) ^-^

Um, it is actually really good. The only problems I am having with it is 1. The battery Life, I use it up in 2 dayz max 2. The screen is Fingerprint prone. Most people get the cleaner any way. It is really well presented, it is even well worth keeping the box.

From a real owner of 2 of these phones, stay away. The stories of the problems you read are real. After reading the posts here, the people that love them either haven't received it yet or it is very new. The phones don't last. Really cool phone, but it breaks. Going on 4th LG Chocolate (or not). Replaced twice due to screen blanking out. Current one, touchpad going, going, almost gone. These were ALL REPLACED, not repaired. 3 phones in just over a year. Warranty expired, year to go on contract, no phone. You decide.

does anybody know how much an lg chocolate phone is to buy in thailand as i can get them in uk35 pounds and hoping to bring them there and double up my money,any info appreciated
