Motorola Bluetooth Headset H710

By Joseph Hanlon on 23 April 2008

We found pairing the H710 irksome and using the headset patchy to say the least. It's a shame such a sexy hands-free device should be let down by such lousy performance.

Design
The H710 is one of the best looking hands-free headsets we've seen recently. In previous reviews we've suggested that the most attractive hands-free headset is the one you can't see, and the H710's miniature dimensions makes this almost the case here. However, with the H710 sitting on our desks it's been hard to look away from what is a very interesting looking device.

Made from a combination of black and silver plastics, the H710 is as lightweight as it's easy on the eye. The headset uses a hinged ear hook, similar to many similar products, but the flip-phone styled microphone is definitely a unique and interesting inclusion. Flipping the boom open activates the headset and reconnects it to your phone for use. Closing the mic not only makes the headset smaller and more streamlined for transporting, but powers down the H710, prolonging the standby battery life.

In total the H710 makes use of only three buttons, a volume key on each side of the headset, and a large button on top. Under the larger button the H710 has a multicoloured LED backlight to communicate the differing states of use; blue for Bluetooth connections, green to tell you the battery is fully charged, red to warn that the battery is about to run out and pink to tell you the H710 is happy.

Charging the H710 is via an unconventionally shaped USB port so you'll have to be sure not to lose the Motorola charger that comes bundled with the headset.

Performance
They say all that glitters is gold; this is not our experience with Motorola's H710 headset. While the H710 is an excellently designed and aesthetically pleasing gadget, using the headset has been harder than seems necessary, and the overall performance has been mediocre at best.

Pairing a Bluetooth headset to a phone should be an almost one-touch process, however, our experience of pairing the H710 to phones has required more concentration than we think the process deserves. After flipping the boom mic open the LED backlight flashes blue several times and then goes blank. At this point you should hold down the main button and wait for the LED to turn solid blue to indicate the H710 is in pairing mode. This describes the process when it works. Often we saw no LED light when we flipped the boom open, and still nothing after we held the button in for several seconds. We'd repeat the process, closing and reopening the microphone, waiting for the blue lights, holding down buttons and swearing loudly.

We attempted to pair the headset with several brands of phones including two Nokias, an iPhone and two Sony Ericssons. The Nokias and the iPhone paired as expected, but the Sony Ericsson handsets couldn't discover the H710 to pair with it.

We had been looking forward to testing the Multipoint feature, the ability to pair to two phones simultaneously, but the difficulties we had pairing were simply multiplied. To activate Multipoint you first shut down the first handset you've paired, then repeat the original pairing process with the second handset. Again we were left flipping the boom mic open and shut, looking for lights and cursing Motorola.

Once paired, our experience making calls varied. Using the Nokia handsets, we experienced considerable distortion with loud crackling and audio drop-outs. During one call the distortion was so bad we had to disconnect the headset to finish the conversation. With the iPhone the performance was much better with clear audio during our calls.

Overall
Our excitement at discovering the attractive H710 on our desks quickly turned to frustration and disappointment when trying to pair the headset and when making calls. Using the H710 with an iPhone gave us some hope that the experience could improve from device to device. If you're interested in this headset we strongly suggest testing it with your handset in the store before you hand over the cash.

    • Good: Great Sound with some Phones
    • Bad: not so good with some model phones

Been using this little things for a few weeks now, i used to use 2 nokias for work and found the sound quality to be OK. but recenlt our company gave me a new dualsim www.dualsim.com.au , i'm not sure why, but the dualsim phone has even better sound thats the nokias, its something to do with the chipsets used inside the dual sim mobile phone. the connect to the nokia's was also effected each time i sat in my car.

    • Good: Sounds quality good with dualsim mobiles
    • Bad: no so good with nokias

strange quirk in the system, i got a dualsim mobile www.dualsim.com.au and the sound quality was better after i switched to this type of mobile. I'm not sure why but i used to carry around 2 nokias, sound quality was great on the nokias, but the dualsim sounded even better. i's something to do with the chipsets used from what i can gather.

    • Good: Very Good Sound Quality, Easy Pairing, Easy Fit on the Ear.
    • Bad: Cant find any yet.

Bought it very cautiously following the expert review, but did not find any such problems.

Paired it with two Sony Ericsson and two Nokia phones (at different times, not all together) and had no problems.

Sound quality is very good and have not had any problems yet. I asked people I was talking to if they could hear me fine and the said yes.

Fits very snuggly on the ear and is very comfortable. At times it sometimes feel as if it is loose, but I realised it was not loose, just light on the ear.

just to test I paired it with two phones simultaneously and it worked fine. You will have to read the manual to get the most out of this function.

The speed of connection to the phone once paired is amazing. flip the boom - and almost instantly it connected.

Overall its a great set and I did not get any of the problems the expert review is talking about.

    • Good: Good sound, comfortable, easy operation
    • Bad: Fits a little loose on the ear

I bought this Motorola 710 last week and love it. I have been through about seven different ones before this one that are the in ear type and are very uncomfortable or just does not fit at all. The 710 is very comfortable because it lays over the ear instead of the uncomfortable ear plugs. It is very easy to use and has clear sound. The only gripe I have about the 710 is it fits a little loose, but Im not going to complain to much about it because it is very comfortable to wear and has clear sound. Alot of these bluetooths I have discovered muffle the sound of the person u listening to which makes it very hard to understand them, not the case with the 710 i would recommend this bluetooth to anyone especially after seven times of returning the others i bought before this one,If u want comfort and good sound the 710 is the one. I rate it a 10.

    • Good: small, comfortable
    • Bad: easy to use, some callers have complained of ambient noise when on street

I lost mine and am going to get another one. It is very small and I think it probably flew out of my bag when I pulled out something else and I didn't notice it. So I suggest getting a small carrying case to make it easier to find in your bag and tougher to lose. A few times when walking on NY streets callers complained it was hard to hear me.

Nice product. It paired with my Samsung Infinity in just seconds, and I really enjoy the fact that it doesn't need to stick in my ear! First thing I did after pairing was to call my office and leave a test message. When I checked the message later, the voice clarity was very good, and strong. Has anyone had a chance to test the unit in a noisy area?

    • Good: Great design-well placed buttons.
      Easy pairing with Samsung phone.
      Great handsfree dialing.
Nothing to stick in my ear.
      Great sound quality
    • Bad: Could fit a little more snugly.
      Probably easy to lose.
      Proprietary charger.

Great design. Paired within seconds on my Samsung phone, sound quality is much better than with my previous two devices. Handsfree calling is great with well placed easy to find without fumbling call button. Nothing like gels or pads in my ear to make a waxy mess just very clear well placed speakers position next to my ear. Fold up boom turns set on/off and will prolong battery life. This is a keeper.

    Re: "Performance
They say all that glitters is gold; this is not our experience with Motorola's H710 headset."

I think the saying that you were trying to refer to is "All that glitters is not gold". However, we let people get away with "I could care less" when they literally mean that they couldn't care less, and that's just one example. So I guess you get a free pass on this one too, even though it was used to make a point that would be turned around 180 degrees if you had used the saying correctly. :)

I can't yet comment on the headset, just ordered one from Amazon. I owned the H700 a few years ago, and loved it until I wore it out.

    • Good: easy use
      clear reception
    • Bad: easy to misplace...

great product... wonderful battery life... the only problem with these blue tooth devices is I keep loosing them, this is my third MOTO headset... longest lasting charge of them all...

    • Good: lightweight, easy to use, good audio quality
    • Bad: Callers said it sounds like speakerphone when in a quiet room.

So far has been a great headset. I have a LG VX8350 Handset. No problems connecting. Just enable bluetooth on the phone, open the mic boom and they found each other just fine. I did not even have to hold down any buttons to get it into pairing mode (possible firmware update).

Good audio quality on my end. Callers have said very minimal road noise in the background when driving, but I've been told when in a quiet room it sounds like I'm on speakerphone.

Lightweight, does not have the ear bud so it feels like it might fall off but hasn't.

3 buttons are easy to use. Volume up (top), volume down (bottom), and the main button (outside). Can be worn on either ear and the volume buttons be swapped by holding the desired volume up button when opening the boom.
