Motorola Droid outed early

By Joseph Hanlon on 27 October 2009

As seemingly accidental as Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction, the Motorola Droid has been outed online by the company that intends to sell it, Verizon Wireless, in the US.

The Boy Genius Report was recently sent a hot tip informing it that a detailed product description of the Moto Droid was available on the Verizon website, including a full list of specifications. The page has since been removed, but not before screenshots could be snapped.

The spec list reads like an Android's dream come true: a 550MHz processor, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS, a 5-megapixel camera, an HTML5 compatible webkit browser, a 3.5mm headphone socket, and it will be bundled with a 16GB microSD card in the US. The Droid sports an impressive 3.7-inch touchscreen with a 480x854-pixel resolution and will run on the latest version of the Android OS, version 2.0. If Android's dreamed of electric sheep in the past, our guess is that sheep will soon fill the Moto Droid's standby hours.

Verizon and Motorola have planned a joint media event for the 28th of October, so all of these details will likely be "re-announced" then. In the meantime, leave us a comment below and answer one simple question: is this the iPhone killer?

I'm not sure but as far as I know, the iPhone doesn't have a location aware augmented reality map app.

Anyone know if it's going to be available in Australia? @JT Performance will always be relevant, although it is true that apps influence the consumers decision. having said that the android will appeal to more advanced users due to the ability of being able to port/write apps without waiting 6 months for approval.

Processor speeds, megapixels in cameras, pixels... they are no longer the main concern for the everyday mobile user.

What keeps the iPhone alive is Applications.

85,000 apps and counting for almost anything... AND available on demand.

Until another platform can create an app world with a large development community, the iPhone will remain on top.

iPhone killer... not unless Apple pulls the plug and stops making 'em.

Because Telstra doesn't like the iphone due to its 'locked content' status which goes against Telstras aim of content providing a revenue stream, this could be their holy grail...

I agree with 'Land of the tech deficient' (above) -

"Perhaps this article should be written with critical acknowledgement about the lack of offerings within Australia?"
