Motorola E398

By Zennith Geisler on 10 November 2004

Motorola’s music mobile combines a full-featured handset that will appeal to a wide range of users whether they're looking for fun, functionality or the perfect mixture of both.

Design
Measuring a relatively small 108 x 46 x 20.5mm, the Motorola E398 brings to the table a large 65K-colour screen and roomy keypad, equally balanced on the face of the phone. Keys are matte silver, contrasting nicely with the E398's black rubbery façade, which provides grip. The usual array of shortcuts is included for navigation along with a joystick at the top of the keypad.

The joystick is shiny silver (along with the 'call' and end' buttons) which makes it slightly slippery and fiddly to use. This can be avoided by sticking to the keypad functions, as everything can be done via either method.

The back of the phone has been left clear, apart from the camera lens and flash, giving it a clean finish. Thin, smooth shortcut buttons are laid out intuitively along both edges of the phone, making it simple to adjust volume and activate voice-tagged entries in the phonebook. There is also a one-click shortcut key to initiate the camera.

Features
The main highlight of the Motorola E398 is of course, its music features. Featuring 22KHz stereo speakers on either side of the handset, the E398 has been designed as a dual-device which combines an MP3 player with a mobile phone. The loudspeaker provides good solid sound playback - a first in the mobile phone world. You can also use the included headset for listening to music or while on a call, though we found the speakerphone option to be quite useful and easy to use.

As well as storing MP3 and Midi files in the E398's 64MB memory card, you can set your favourite tracks as your ring tone, or compose something original using the MotoMixer - Motorola's DJ mixing function.

"Rhythm lights" sync a colourful light show with your music, which is a fun, cool feature and another way to know your phone is ringing -- especially if you have the volume down or set to vibrate.

Music features aside, the E398 has a host of other utilities to rival many of the high-end handsets currently available. These include Bluetooth connectivity, office applications, downloadable Java games and MMS.

There is no video recording feature on the E398, which is a bit disappointing as you can view MPEG4 files on the phone but can't create your own.

The menu can be displayed in icons or text form and you can choose from a large variety of themes that offer skins, wallpapers and screensavers to help personalise your mobile.

Performance
With so many features and multimedia capacity, battery life is the first issue that springs to mind. The E398 claims a maximum talk time for up to 9.3 hours and 4.5 hours when used as an MP3 player.

Using it primarily to make and receive calls, as well as playing the occasional game or MP3 track, we averaged about four days between charges. Of course, if you want to play non-stop games or listen to songs for extended periods of time, expect to be recharging a lot sooner.

The E398 has 5MB of internal memory, as well as using a TransFlash memory card to extend storage space. Our review model came with a 64MB card which allowed ample space to save MP3s and photos.

We are fairly happy with the pictures from the phone's VGA camera, though the flash (which can double as a mini-torch in the dark) didn't improve night-time shots greatly, making them slightly grainier if anything.

To transfer files (MP3s, Midi songs, photos, and video) between the phone and computer, Motorola has come up with a funky GUI which replicates the look of the phone. The phone can be plugged into a PC via an USB cable (included in the box) that allows you to move files with a click of the mouse.

I've owned this phone for around 2.5years now and have just upgraded so thought I'd write a quick review. Had good service out of this phone and was happy with it for what I paid (AU$59). Call quality and reception have been excellent. Reliability has been excellent. Downsides are that the phone is quite slow when navigating the menus and typing sms. I bought a 1GB memory card for it to use as an MP3 player but I found the music player was too slow and clumsy to use. Also, you can't plug in standard size headphones (ie takes 2.5mm not 3.5mm plug). The volume was too loud for my ears even on the lowest setting. So I didn't use it as a music player all that often. Have had the occasional problem with charging but cleaning the contacts or jiggling the connection usually fixed that. I like the way it beeps every few minutes when you have a missed call or new sms waiting to be read. Disappointed my new phone doesn't have this feature. I liked the look/style of the phone when new. Although unfortunately the silver has chipped off badly as well as some of the rubberised coating. Overall, was very happy with the phone for the price.

    • Good: Reliable and easy to use
      Good call quality
Stereo speakers built in- haven't seen this in any other phone
    • Bad: Slow sms and menu speed
      Music player slow and clumsy
      Paint chips easily

A few steps away from being one of the best phones out there! Used this phone heavily for four years!

    • Good: Excellent reception, talk & standby time.
      Loud & sounds great.
      Clear display & keypad.
Did I mention excellent reception? My wife's last 3 phones will have no reception when I still have 2 of the 5 bars. Same provider, same location just different phones.
    • Bad: Have changed outer casing twice in 4 years as print & rubber comes off.
Charger/USB connections not well designed - often need to clean contacts.
      Buttons occassionally unresponsive.
      Software a bit slow.

It's a good mp3 player/phone for a fraction of the cost of others with similar features

    • Good: simple and straight forward interface and controls. Those used to the Nokia controls will take time to get used to it though. Very good sound quality through the stereo headphones. External speakers are also good and has a very good and easy to use speakerphone. I'm using a 1 GB memory card in the phone and it works well with the device. Good screen resolution for the price.
    • Bad: camera quality is not good at all. No video recording. The silver colour on the sides scratch off easily. Pretty slow. When the battery gets completely discharged (i.e., when the phone switches off after the entire battery has been drained), the given motorolla charger cannot charge it. You have to take the battery out of the phone and give it a boost using a simple battery booster-charger device. After that, it gets back to normal so u can put it back to the phone and charge it normally.

    • Good: Hmm I dont know
    • Bad: Hope Not, Haa Heee

It has fairly good sound quality and good video quality.

    • Good: colour screen, camera with flash and 4x-zoom, mp3 player, mp3 ring tones, large range on ring tones, easy to use with shortcuts, good joystick, stereo speakers, flashing coloured lights, headphones, great games, heaps of entertainment, expandable memory is so good.
    • Bad: it show as anything very easy, can hold hardly send any messages, cord breaks easily to PC and charger, cant vibrate and ring at same time, when it does turn on it won't turn off.

Same old battery problems. Charger will not charge phone. My son, who is autistic contacted Motorola and they told him it was not covered under warranty. He put the phoen in his cupboard and of course, the warranty period ran out. Now we have a phone that is unusable. Good on you Motorola ..keep taking advantage of people and forget about any customer service. Your phone is a dud.

    • Good: Nil
    • Bad: Charger is very second rate as is the after sale and customer service.

one of the best phones i've ever had. i've taken care of it and it's served me well.

    • Good: build quality is excellant, stereo is loud and works well, joystick is easy to use, menu set-out is logical, bluetooth works well
    • Bad: can be a bit confusing at the start, 'silver' on sides of phone scratch easy, screen shows up fingerprints and chips/cracks, can be a bit slow

    It's GREAT!

I had pretty high expectations when I first got it, but I guess it's alright. I was really impressed by the quality of the stereo headphones (before one of them fell apart). Battery life is alright, shorter than I expected but satisfactory. I love this phone. It's basically is an MP3 player/mobile/digital camera in one!! It's GREAT. i can just grab it and walk out the door (providing it's charged) and know I won't be completely lost.

    • Good: colour screen, camera with flash and 4xzoom, mp3 player, mp3 ring tones, large range on ring tones, easy to use with shortcuts, good joystick, stereo speakers, flashing coloured lights, headphones, great games, heaps of entertainment, rubber casing (non-slip), expandable memory and A LOT OF FUN!!
    • Bad: can't seem to be able to transfer MP3 songs at the moment - but have been able to in the past (hmm), pictures and movies from the computer onto the mobile, one of the ear phones effortlessly broke apart ($100 for new ones - V. expensive), camera flash is a joke, heard some stories that it turns off for no reason and it's a bit big compared to other phones.

    Great Phone

    • Good: Good Sound, a lot of features, good interface
    • Bad: Hate that i can't change the dafault settings for internet, and i hate that i can't change the images or sound that are default for the mobile.(of course i can mod it.... but...)
