Motorola RAZR V3x

By Joanne Simpson, CNET.com.au on 13 March 2006

A sleek and robust design wrapped around some interesting features, the Motorola RAZR V3x outclasses its 2G predecessor in both style and performance but is not as razor sharp as the hype might suggest.

The Motorola RAZR V3x won the Best 3GSM Handset 2006 Award at the 3GSM World Congress this year and is aimed squarely at both the fashion and feature conscious users -- it's even gone all disco with the release of a hot pink version. It's not the most beautiful or the best performer out there, and cannot hope to live up to its hype, but it's got enough to keep us interested.

Design
Despite its name and heritage, the RAZR V3x isn't a slither of metal so thin you could cut yourself on it and as a 3G phone at 20mm it is slightly bulkier than its older 2G cousin, the RAZR V3. It's made from a different soft plastic material than its relative too. Sturdy is too strong a word, but the clamshell handset certainly sits firmly and squarely in the palm of your hand. For the clumsy amongst us, the phone looks like it could take the odd knock and come back fighting. The handset has an external screen that is capable of 65K colours and a resolution of 96 x 80 pixels.

The phone is lanky at 180mm tall when fully out-stretched, but we personally like the sense of space and the large, 2.2-inch TFT LCD screen. On the right side of the phone you'll find the small camera launcher button and the voice dialing button, which enables you to dial people in the phone book by speaking their name or number, and also listen to voicemail. You can also launch the camera using your voice ("lights camera action!"). The left side of the phone has a button to launch the camera in video shooting mode and a volume/ring tone control.

Features
The RAZR V3x comes with a dual-ear stereo headset which performs well, a mini USB port for your connectivity requirements and wireless stereo options that enable a compatible Bluetooth audio device, supporting the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), to work with the on-board multimedia player (this supports MP3, AAC+, WMV, WMA and Real video/audio files).

64MB of memory is built in and there is a slot under the battery for microSD (TransFlash) card -- adding up to 512MB of storage. The microSD is the same kind of media format used for previous Motorola 3G models (A100, C975, E1000) and is plenty for most users.

Motorola, not traditionally applauded in the camera phone category, has placed a 2-megapixel camera in the V3x with options for 1.2-megapixel, 640x480 and 320x240 resolutions. The camera offers standard features such as lighting settings and timer shootings and perhaps best of all a macro and landscape manual switch for close up and distance shots.

SMS/EMS/MMS, e-mail and instant messaging are all included, as well as MIDI-based polyphonic and digital music tones support. In the connectivity basket, the phone is equipped with high speed GPRS (2.5G) and W-CDMA (3G) network data connectivity and there is a built-in WAP browser.

Performance
Making voice and video calls was seamless, and the camera performed as well as we'd expect on a mobile phone. Self portraits can be taken with the clamshell closed, by simply holding down the camera button and allowing the outer sub-display to act as a virtual mirror. The integrated light works as a flash at a distance of two metres, but I found taking shots at night a bit of a waste of time.

Overall, we found the user interface a tad troublesome. For those familiar only with Nokia phones, there seemed to be a lot of sub menus and searching for options was a chore without logic or fluidity in some cases. Without the help of the large, user friendly keypad, we think we might have shut the shell and given up a lot sooner.

It might be another Nokia-bias but as proficient, Olympic-standard text messengers, we found the iTAP predictive text a bit of a hurdle. It supports word completion but we switched to manual text entry after several minutes of trying to type as quickly as we would on the T9 (text on nine keys) system that Nokia supports.

The 880mAh battery life was average and might prove troublesome to heavy Bluetooth users or people who utlilise the phones other energy-demanding features. We found it next to impossible to draw longer than two or three days from a single charge.

WAP-browsing was quick enough, with the odd faltering load, but all media streaming and playback requests are handled by the built-in media applications and performed well.

    • Good: Good Camera for Stills - Nice Design
    • Bad: Video - Size - Predictive Text ...

Ive had this phone for about 2 years and so far the only problem ive had is that it sometimes randomly turns on and off with a white or black screen, Arghhhh so annoying :P

    • Good: average camera, good flash thingie that can double up as a torch, good speakers, nice features, 3G, video calling
    • Bad: slow texting, bad internal camera, randomly dies, scratches easily, lags

When I first got this phone, I thought it was really good and I think I used it for roughly a year and a half. Then I switched to a nokia 6110 navigator, that broke, so I switched back to this phone. The texting was slow, and I found it quite hard to text. Sometimes the phone randomly shuts off, sometimes the phone freezes too (quite rare). But otherwise, this phone is a good phone to have for a year or so.

    • Good: Looks nice!
    • Bad: That phone is crap! The battery lasts at least 2 minutes. It's hard to use!

I got Motorola RAZR2. It's better than Motorola RAZR V3x.

    • Good: 2mp camera with flash that makes a good torch, reasonably loud speaker (when i first got it anyway), automatically turns of discoverable mode in bluetoothe after 3 minutes, umm looks nice in the rubbish, i suppose, motorola phone tools
    • Bad: slow to start up, bulky, speaker has decreased in maximum volume since purchased, i missed a call about a job because it was in my pocket and i didnt hear it ringing, voice commanding is a joke, bought a bluetooth headset that took ten minutes before the phone would let me use it, takes a whole minute to get out of the web browser (in the meantime, it is completely unusable) hangs up randomly **** poor battery life, scrathces too easily, it decides when it talks to bluetooth devices, i actually bought it in the first place (probably the biggest problem with the phone)

I Hate the phone, and am saving up for a blackberry (have one on loan from work atm) i must say even though it was a horrible phone, i will miss it. i put up with it's unusual attributes, like the buttons on the side making it go bleep repeatedly when it touches things in my pocket, and slow load times from the memory card. but when it made a scary noise in my ear when i answered a call, i decided to start thinking about a new one, but i can't really afford a blackberry. it had a real bright LED on the front for the "flash" but i found it a good torch. the two buttons on the right side (voice command and camera) no longer work, and bluetooth was wierd for inter-phone communications, however i found that if you use manage>copy instead of (use bluetooth) it would find the majority of devices. last night, however, it did the noise in my ear thing again when i answered it, but wouldnt turn back on. so i told my boss, and he got a blackberry out and said "I Want It Back!" Damn such a nice interface those blackberrys have got. (oops sorry, supposed to be dissing my old motorola) just such a bad phone. i would put it in my pocket and open it, and it would have random numbers in the entry. one time i was wathcing a horror film, and it had dialled the emergency services number. oops. they traced the phone and the cops turned up 10 minutes later. armed offenders squad and everything, omg i got such a fright. the camera is the ONLY thing apart from the loud speaker that i have positive comments about, with the manual focus slider that allowed me to take a photo of a suspicious caterpillar, which helped with a big MAF investigation into the fall apple moth. i guess it is a sign of the times, really. when phones last us 6 months before they give up. i have a macintosh SE (1983) that has had no modifications from factory that i am aware of. it still goes without a problem. why dont moty take a leaf out of apple's book, and build their consumer products to last?

    • Good: I've had few problems in over two years. Software update solved NETWORK connectivity issues. NO flaking paint. NO scratches.
    • Bad: Remove battery and gently clean contacts periodically as dust gets in there and causes blackouts...

Most of the problems people have experienced with the V3x are network related though none (networks) would ever admit it.

    • Good: Pictures and Videos are Wicked! Game sound is awsome as! SO is the sound. Nice big keypad for big fingers.
    • Bad: What Sucks? Well its annoying when prediction comes up everytime u go back into messages! Grr. and the front camrea smashes easly when i droped it. Opps.

Ive Had This Phone For a While. It was ok. Until I droped it! XD The right lid holder snapped off! Then It turned off! I Kinda reconmend it cuz all the features are exelent! But the pain coat and the lid holder has to be more stronger. but anyway im getting the Motorola V3xx soon. I will take more care of that =D

    • Good: looked okay
    • Bad: everything about its function

rubbish! ill never buy a motorola based on this phone and my partners experience with the original v3. phone constantly switched off by itself and change its ringtones on it own and the volume. It ended up being snapped in half due to frustration!

  • Its just....a phone disaster gave 6/10 on 07/09/2008 19:48 Report abuse

    • Good: - Micro SD Slot (I need more memory even though i own two mp3 players).
      - Great Camera
      - Volume
      - Large Screen
    • Bad: - The sound when you turn it off and on, its so annoying.
      - Suddenly screen goes black/white and then shows that the phone has no service (3 Network)
      - The black rusts off.
      - The silver finish is starting to rust easily
      - The motorola phone tools does not work on Window Vista
      - Not enough memory (exclude micro SD)

My phone is starting to stuff, I had my phone for a year and a half. Apart from the 3G network suddenly having no service. My phone works well since it was purchased until a few months ago. The Motorola is a good looking phone. Sometimes my phone suddenly turns off and sometimes its on and just goes to a black/white screen, maybe its because its been dropped soo many times on the floor (concrete). My Black motorola is still in use, but its just the fact that it stuff's up when its in desperate need by the owner.
ADVICE...If you really need a new phone, and its on plan/cap, wait until its on prepaid, dont buy a useless phone thats going to stuff. There are better phones out there that suits, dont be persuaded by what you see.......read the reviews first before you go and get the phone.
