Motorola RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition

By Ella Morton on 05 December 2007

Motorola's V8 has been dipped in gold, covered in snakeskin and endorsed by David Beckham. The quadband clamshell has 2GB of non-expandable memory and a 2-megapixel camera, and comes with a pouch, Bluetooth headset and swanky suede wipecloth.

Motorola's V8 Luxury Edition handset is the swanky one in the RAZR2 line-up. Though all three models -- the V8, Luxury V8 and V9 -- sport identical super-slim silhouettes, there are two main differences as far as specs are concerned. Both V8s are quadband GSM handsets while the V9 is HSDPA, and the V8s have 2GB of non-expandable memory instead of the V9's 45MB-plus-microSD-slot combo.

With the V8 Luxury Edition, the focus is on fashion. Well, David Beckham's idea of fashion, which is nothing if not distinctive. The handset is accented with 18-karat gold, and the back surface offers a tactile matte snakeskin finish. If that's not quite serpenty enough for you, it also comes with a patent black snakeskin pouch and matching lanyard with what looks like a gold coin attached. A suede wipecloth and teeny Bluetooth headset -- with custom gold-rimmed case for charging -- seal the deal.

Super-rich soccer star and clotheshorse David Beckham caused a Sydney Optus store -- and the pavement outside -- to be clogged with rabid fans when he made an appearance at the handset's launch in November this year. Between flashing his pearlies for the paparazzi throng, Becks talked up the V8, saying he had "a certain amount of input" into the handset's design.

This phone has a major league problem in that the battery cover falls off in your pocket. The battery cover has four microscopic, teeny weeny, totally inadequate locking lugs that hook up into the back of the phone. The battery cover has a very grippy rubber surface. Combine this with the pathetic retaining system and this is why your battery cover slides off in your pocket every day.
If you are not a rhodes scholar, keep the users guide close by so that you can work out how to use this phone. Good once you learn about it.

    • Good: Very clear reception. Most important, has a large clear clock (No need to buy another watch). Large dialled number view.
    • Bad: Battery cover falls off in your pocket.

Excellent phone! I have had absolutely no problems with mine and it turns heads everywhere. Very impressive.

    • Good: I have direct access to a great stockist and am selling this one at only $Au420. Get in contact with me on luke89@live.com.au and I can show you proof. As I said this is my own phone of choice even though I have access to many and I love it.

    Fantastic looking phone.

    • Bad: Can't even recieve animated texts!!! Big deal you say - my husband has had a stroke and can not text but could sent these, also my little grand children. Motorola have no knowledge of their product, initially telling me my husband RAV3 didn't have the capability to send animated texts, then telling ME to download a generic template from another phone/provider.......... as if I would know how, and finally telling me to use email, that might be reliable!! Battery has very poor life span. On second phone because initially Motorola said it was faulty because I couldn't recieve animated texts. Second no better.

I am on my 5th - yes 5th v8. I wanted this phone for the user interface, flat key pad, good graphics, big screen size - which are all good. BUT - the battery life is the absolute pits and drives me insane! I am not a heavy phone user (calls or txts). I do not use the camera, music player or mms and the phone still needs to be recharged every day. OK I learnt to live with that but now it has started to discharge after 12 hrs of practically no use. I would never recommend this phone to anyone. Will go back to Sony or Nokia.

    • Good: Graphics, user interface key pad.
    • Bad: BATTERY LIFE will drive you nuts!!!!

I can hardly complain. I must first admit that I did receive this phone through a promotion. very lucky indeed. First up... obviously it looks great. Everyone obsesses over it. The previous model gold razr was just way too over the top. This is a little more subtle. Overall its a great phone to use and it just screams quality.

    • Good: -Looks
      -Build quality
      -Menus
-Large clear screen (interior and exterior)
-Can control music from the outside with touch sensitive keys!
      - Sound quality
      - Easy media syncronisation
    • Bad: I cant think of many.
      - Its a little heavy. If im running to catch a bus or something you can feel it pulling your pants if they are not tight lol
      - head phones plug in on the side
      - no dedicted camera key like my old Z6

    • Good: cooool
    • Bad: luxury

Very interesting phone. Not 3G but overall a nice, fast interface that does just about everything well. Slimmer than my V9, but the menus seem to be just as fast.

    • Good: It just works. Does everything well. Understated, rather elegant w/out being glitzy. Extremely good with RF signal capture, one of the best in this regard.
    • Bad: Operating system does not lend itself well to modifications. You're stuck with the OEM firmware package, which is admittedly very good.
