Motorola V171

By Ella Morton on 15 April 2005

The v171 will suffice for those wanting a cheap phone for travel or emergencies, but its humble features and lack of extras will frustrate most users.

3.1
  • Good: Cheap as chips • Sturdy design
  • Bad: Maddening menu design • Small screen • Very few features
  • Specs: Flip • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$173.00
Just as it's futile to compare the latest Vin Diesel flick to Citizen Kane, sometimes electronic gadgets have to be judged within the context of their intended audience. Such is the case with the Motorola v171, which, with its basic features, no-fuss design and bargain basement price, is made for the budget-abiding prepaid mobile user.

Design
It's pretty clear that the designers at Motorola are keen to zero in on the school-age demographic. From the opening animation of an anime-esque character spraying graffiti across the screen to the three arcade-style games, the v171 is all about adolescence. For those who are old enough to remember a world before The Simpsons, the youthful vibe may feel a tad forced - sort of like Austin Powers' Dr. Evil trying to prove his knowledge of pop culture by dancing the Macarena.

The clamshell design of the v171 gives the phone a sleek look when closed, although the antenna harks back to the dark ages of monochrome screens and multitap-only SMS. Friends whose names feature at the top of the alphabet will appreciate this phone - the form factor is handy for preventing accidental calls, since the keys can't be pressed when it is folded.

Unfolding the phone reveals just how itty bitty the 96x65 pixel screen is. At about a third of the size of the flip-out panel, the LCD just looks odd, and sneaky attempts to make it appear bigger by surrounding the screen with a contoured black border aren't fooling anyone. Compounding the problem is the large, non-adjustable font size, which means you'll be spending a lot of time scrolling through menus.

Features
In this Blackberry-populated era of mobile connectivity, video recording and email, the v171 is notable for its simplicity. The inclusion of WAP is a tad baffling -- prepaid users are unlikely to shell out for the slow downloads, and the screen size makes viewing web content a frustrating ordeal.

Performance
One area of performance in which low-end phones tend to dominate over their more expensive companions is battery life. With medium usage, the v171 will soldier on for the best part of a week without needing a charge. This is great for tourists on the road and those in need of a phone for emergencies.

Text input in iTap (predictive) mode is initially a lengthy affair - each word must be scrolled to and confirmed before moving on to the next - but the software becomes more accurate over time, learning to suggest words common to the user's vocabulary first. These words need not be confined to conventional dictionaries; our stringent, scientific attempts at emulating teen speak revealed that words like bling, jiggy and dawg all eventually achieved legitimacy.

Menu navigation can also be irritating, with many essential options hidden under layers of sub menus. There is the ability to rearrange the main menu options and create a personalised 'MyMenu', but even this option does not rectify the need to keep scrolling and selecting ad nauseum.

For those born on this side of the 90s and travellers in need of a low-cost, basic phone, the v171 is fine for keeping in touch with friends and family. For anyone wanting to do more than just talk and text, the limited features, teeny screen and maddening menu will almost certainly prove to be an annoyance.

I love this phone, I've had it for 3 years now. I use it as a vocal communications device. I've read all these complaint comments. "Small screen, bad wallpaper, bad screensaver, bad games"? I don't look at my phone, I call a number and talk. What are you people doing, staring at the phone? The screen shows 3 lines - 1 would have been enough.

    • Good: Simple, cheap service.
    • Bad: None.

The more I use this phone the more I dislike it.

    • Good: small(?), light, good battery
    • Bad: bad menus, tiny memory, confusing options, ugly, lame games + many, many more

Bought this hunk of junk for $20 literally! and well it's pretty crap. Texting is hard (Especially since it's different to other motorolas like the L6's!) but that's basically all I use it for. Just a replacement till I get my new one, it's not even better than the Nokia 3530! GOSH.

I had my motorola v171 for almost a year and for a while I was pleased with it. At the time, I was 13 years old and this was my first phone. After about 9 months, the LED light just went out. So I couldn't use the phone in the dark at all. Also, my vibrating alert just went out all of a sudden. Maybe it wasn't meant to last that long but whatever. Keep in mind, I was slightly rough with the phone, but not anymore than anyone else would be. It takes forever for the menu screen to load. Overall, I believe that this is a great starter phone, but the features are not up to par with the latest phones.

    • Good: good starter phone, good battery life, phonebook capacity , text messaging, cheap
    • Bad: bad screen, no front screen, missing many feautures including camera, menu takes forever to load, tears up easily over time

I got my V171 under a year ago. the phone has terrible reception and very limited features. The ringtones do not go loud enough, so if in a loud environment you can struggle to hear you phone ringing.

    • Good: A simple phone, for first phone buyers
    • Bad: Screen is small.
      scratches and dints easily
      bad signal strength
      few features
      not an attractive phone

Hate this thing, I let the prepaid service expire today.

    • Good: Relatively cheap, keys protected from accidentally pushed
    • Bad: -Phone would randomly, often, shut off and need settings reset.
      -extremely poor signal strength
      -vibration ring undetectable
      -ring volume too low
      -few/no features

The phone is a big drain on the battery.I am on the 3rd phone, and it Needs recharging every other day.It just drains with very little use.It is a hard on battery life..It is not good on battery life as the maunufacturer claims or what anyone else has said.I have experienced the poor battery life on this model three times.

    • Good: Good sound.Works well.Easy to use.Good looking small phone
    • Bad: The worst batery life of any cell phone out there.Too many buttons to press to get to what you need.Screen is small, but that is quibbling. Ringer is not loud enoughin noisy environments. Does not give the number of who is on your voicemail many times.

great little phone! had this phone for about a year and very pleased with it. previous phone was a nextel and this simple gadget is much better. good battery life, clear reception and text messages, what more do you want. if you drool over the razor, this isn't for you. if you make a few calls a day and some simple text msgs, grab this phone you won't be dissapointed.
