Find out how to revive your LP collection by preserving it digitally.
Many audiophiles claim that analog vinyl LPs sound better than digital CDs or MP3 files, since a digitized sound loses all of the sonic information between its sampling points. But this doesn't change the fact that CDs and MP3s last a lot longer, don't deteriorate with repeated listenings, and can be played on a much wider range of devices than a vinyl record. These simple guides show you how to change that once-treasured vinyl LP into a vibrant and up-to-date digital copy quickly and simply.
Before we start, though, a quick word on copyright. Many Australian users presume that we're under the same kinds of laws when it comes to reproducing personally owned music as is enjoyed in the United States, where the Fair Use provision of the American Home Recording Act makes such activity perfectly legal. This isn't the case at all under Australian law, which takes a much stronger line on copyright activity.
Put simply, you don't actually have the right to do this, but then that also applies to activities like downloading songs to an iPod (in the absence of an officially approved iTunes music store) and that hasn't stopped Apple's portable selling so fast it'd make your head spin. We're not aware of any cases of individual users being taken to court for reproducing music they legitimately own copies of in an Australian context -- but then again, we're journalists, not lawyers. Of course, if you happen to have recorded your own music to vinyl, and own the copyright, you're perfectly in the clear. As always, tread carefully, and if in any doubt, consult proper legal representation before proceeding with any action.
