In the world of headphones, there are countless portable models and a quickly growing number of wireless models, but the marriage of the two is in the early stage.

Call it the honeymoon period, if you like -- only in this case, it's not such a happy time in the relationship. Rather, companies attempting to provide wire-free listening in portable applications are still testing the waters.

As such, we've yet to see many portable wireless headphones that offer the right combination of sound quality, comfort, and affordability, but at least some progress is being made. (After all, headphone manufacturers must know that there's a market for this type of product ... right?)

So far, we've reviewed four 'phones that fall into this new category, and rounded them up for you below. Know of a good product that didn't make the list? Use the "TalkBack" link below to send us your suggestion.

      Bose mobile on-ear headset

The sound quality and build of the Bose mobile on-ear headset is great but the premium you'll pay for the microphone attachment is daylight robbery.

Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Cancelling Headphones

The Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Cancelling Headphones may lighten the wallet, but they are a great option for frequent fliers and tetchy commuters who need superior noise cancellation.

      Philips SHE9850 sound-isolating earphones

An excellent all-rounder, with good detail, a balanced, warm sound and superb comfort and fit. Deeper bass and brighter treble exists in competing models, but for almost all genres of music and in most listening environments, the SHE9850s will impress and for a good price.
